Certified Auto Sound and Security in Abbotsford teamed up with Performance Watersports to build this Malibu 22VLX stereo system for the Vancouver Boat Show. We wanted to make sure any potential clients attending the boat show would be aware of our marine audio installation capabilities. We built the boat to show off the JL Audio brand of marine amplifiers and speakers. Read on to find out what we created for one lucky boat buyer.
Audio System Control
Malibu Boats has developed a control system called the Command Center. The touchscreen interface gives the pilot control over ballast, Power Wedge II and Surf Gate operation, and – of course – audio system functions. We extracted an audio signal from the Command Center and fed it to a trio of JL Audio M-Series Amplifiers.
Wakeboard Tower Speakers
To provide excellent sound for whoever is at the end of the tow rope, we installed two pairs of JL Audio M880-ETXv3-SG-WH enclosed coaxial tower speakers. These enclosures are made from high-quality fiberglass with a high-gloss white finish. The speakers in the enclosures are an 8.8-inch coaxial design than can handle up 250 watts of power. Our fabrication team created a set of custom brackets to secure the new pods to the factory mounting location. We also added a unique illumination solution for the speakers.
The tower speakers are powered by an M800/8v2 eight-channel amplifier that is bridged to run as a four-channel amp. Each speaker enclosure has 200 watts of power available from the amplifier. The Command Center provides separate control for the tower speaker volume relative to the rest of the boat.
Interior Speaker Upgrade
Our team installed two pairs of M650-CCS-SG-WH 6.5-inch marine coaxial speakers with Sport grilles in the bow of the boat. One set is back of the front bench seat and the second set is in the walkway through to the central area of the boat. The front speakers are powered by an M400/4 four-channel marine amplifier.
Two sets of M77-CCX-SG-WH speakers are mounted in the central seating area of the boat. As you can see from the photos, all the equipment in the boat is illuminated with green LED lighting. Our fabrication team created acrylic plastic mounting spacers for all the speakers to give them a unique look. The rear speakers are powered by the four main channels of an M1000/5V2 amplifier.
Amp Rack and System Subwoofer
To provide good, clean bass response for the sound system upgrade, we installed a single 12-inch JL Audio M12IB6-SG-WH subwoofer in the panel under the helm. Our team created a custom mounting plate for the subwoofer out of marine-grade plastic and wrapped it in vinyl suitable for outdoor applications. We added additional green LED lighting to the mounting panel. The subwoofer channel of the M1000/5v2 amplifier provides up to 600 watts to drive the sub. We added a JL Audio HD-RLC remote level control to the helm to let the pilot control the subwoofer volume.
The three amplifiers are mounted on a panel in the storage locker on the port side of the boat. We created an amp rack from marine-grade plastic and wrapped it in white marine-grade vinyl. More green LEDs illuminate the amplifiers. The amps are out of the way, allowing tow ropes or life jackets to be stored easily.
Malibu 22VLX Stereo System on Display
It was an honour to be able to show off this Malibu 22VLX stereo system at the Vancouver Boat Show. The attention to detail our fabrication team exhibited on the system installation was fantastic. Show attendees loved how we integrated the green LED lighting to pick up on the green vinyl accents on the boat. They were impressed with our ability to create components like the custom acrylic speaker spacer rings and new mounting brackets for the tower enclosures.
