A client from Abbotsford came to Driven Audio looking for a big improvement upgrading his 2012 Porsche Cayman S audio system. Our team spent time looking over the vehicle with the client, listening as he explained his goals for the upgrades and auditioning equipment equipment in our shop.
Starting At The Source
We knew right from the beginning that the client needed a technology upgrade, so we started by installing a Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX navigation unit in the dash. The client now has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, so he gained great voice control over all major smartphones, allowing him easy access to phone calls, texting, reminders, music and navigation functions, all by voice command. He also gained Bluetooth for music streaming and hands-free calling, along with a state-of-the-art turn-by-turn navigation system. Driven used a perfectly matched trim plate that made the Pioneer unit look factory-installed in his Cayman.
Any good sound upgrade needs a great set of speakers, so we turned to Audiofrog for the front stage. We used the GB60 6.5” mid-bass driver in the factory location in the door, installed in our custom composite mounting plates. We also installed a GB40 4” midrange in the factory location in the door, again using our in-house machined custom speaker adapters. To round out the front stage, we installed their GB10 1” tweeters in the factory tweeter locations.
Silencing The Vibrations
We also treated the doors with Soundskins damping material to eliminate any rattling or vibration that may occur. We installed FAST rings on the front of the GB60 drivers to seal them to the door panel, improving the mid-bass sound in the car.
Power And Processing
Next, we turned our attention to the power and signal processing. We hid two Audison Prima amps in a cavity in the front trunk, an AP4.9 Bit and an AP4D. One amp is bridged on the GB60s, sending 520 watts of power to them, and the other amp sends more than 70 watts per channel of clean power to the midranges and tweeters. We used the channel nine output on the AP4.9 bit amp to send the aftermarket audio signals to the factory Bose subwoofer amplifier.
Tweaked To Perfection
Once the install was completed, our skilled technicians started the tuning process on the amplifiers. Every speaker in the vehicle now has digital delay, crossover, nine bands of parametric equalization and output level adjustments. Thanks to the hands of a skilled tuner, the improvements are astounding. Even the Bose subwoofer sounds immensely better once we applied our tuning to it.
Porsche Cayman S Audio Thrills
When the client came to pick up the vehicle, he was thrilled with the fit and finish of the installation. He thought the Porsche looked like it came from the factory this way, and that made our day. The proof is in the sound, though. When we cranked it up for the first time, he was all smiles. He knew he was to spend lots of time listening to his new sound system.
