A client from Abbotsford recently visited Certified Autosound and Security to inquire about upgrading his 2016 Toyota Tacoma audio system. After meeting with the client and examining the vehicle, we put together an audio system upgrade package that would add clarity, detail and dramatically increased volume capability to any music he wanted to enjoy. With the plan in place, the client purchased components for the system over the following few months. Once he had everything, we scheduled an appointment to begin the installation.
Source Unit Integration and Signal Processing
The client chose an Audison bit One digital signal processor to take the audio signal from the factory source unit and manipulate it for the new speakers in the vehicle. The processor includes crossovers, equalization and signal delay settings for each of the seven amplification channels we’d be using in the system.
We mounted a DRC MP controller for the bit One in the storage pocket on the left side of the dash. The controller allows the client to adjust the subwoofer level and choose from different system tuning presets without the need for a laptop.
Rockford Fosgate Amplifiers
To power the system, the client chose a pair of Rockford Fosgate Power Series amplifiers. A five-channel TM1000X5ad amplifier powers the tweeters, rear speakers and the subwoofer while a TM400X2ad amp powers the midrange drivers in the front doors. The five-channel amp produces up to 100 watts from each of its four main channels and 600 watts for the subwoofer. The two-channel provides 200 watts per channel for the midrange drivers.
We mounted the amplifiers on an ABS plastic panel that is secured to the back wall of the truck. Stinger power wire, speaker wire and interconnects handle power delivery and signal routing for the system.
Toyota Tacoma Audio System Speakers
We installed a set of BLAM S 165.100 6.5-inch components in the front of the vehicle. The woofers from the set are mounted to ABS plastic adapter plates at the bottom of the doors, and the tweeters are mounted in the factory location at the top on their own set of plastic adapters. We treated the doors and back wall of the Tacoma with a layer of SQL Audio Soundmat damping material to reduce rattles and help keep the cabin of the truck quiet while on the highway.
A set of Rockford Fosgate T165 coaxial speakers in the rear doors increases the system’s output capabilities and allows rear-seat passengers to hear instruments and vocals more clearly.
JL Audio Stealthbox Subwoofer System
The client chose the JL Audio SB-T-TACDCG3/10TW3 Stealthbox subwoofer system for the truck. This enclosure is designed specifically for 2016 and never Toyota Tacoma Double Cab vehicles and features a single 10-inch 10TW3 shallow-mount subwoofer. JL finished the enclosure in a durable dark gray carpet that matches the plastic trim panel behind the seats nicely.
Toyota Tacoma Sound System Tuning
With all the gear installed, the next step was to configure the amplifiers and digital signal processor, then tune the system. We used our RTA microphone system to measure the output of each speaker. Using that information, we fine-tuned the frequency response of the system using the crossover and equalizer in the Audison bit One processor to create a lifelike soundstage with realistic tonal and natural tonal balance. Rather than hearing sound coming from each speaker location in the vehicle, it sounds as though the music is coming from a virtual stage that spans the width of the windshield.
