Car Audio Electrical Theory – Amplitude and Frequency in AC Signals

October 21, 2018 By Certified Autosound & Security

AmplitudeIn our ongoing discussion of car audio electrical theory, we need to discuss some of the characteristics of alternating current signals. These points of discussion include the concept of amplitude and frequency. Understanding the concept of frequency is crucial to developing an understanding of how the components in our audio systems work.

The Concept of Signal Amplitude

Thankfully, we are going to start off easy with a discussion of signal amplitude. When it comes to the ability of an AC signal to do work, just as with a DC power source, more amplitude (or level) means that more work can be done.

AmplitudeIn a DC power source, the amplitude is fixed at a certain level. In our cars, this level is around 12 volts. In our homes, the voltage at the wall receptacle is 120V. High-power devices like an electric stove, a clothes dryer or an air conditioner are typically powered by 240V to reduce the amount of current required to make these devices operate.

When we want to reproduce sound, we need to supply an audio signal from an amplifier to the voice coil of a speaker. Ignoring the design limitations of a speaker, supplying more voltage results in the cone moving farther and thus producing more sound.

If our amplifier is producing 1 volt rms of signal to a speaker with a nominal impedance of 4 ohms, then the speaker is receiving 0.25 watts of power (calculated using the equation P = V^2 ÷ R). If we increase the voltage to 2 volts, the power at the speaker is now 1 watt ((2×2) ÷ 4). If the voltage increases to 10 volts, the power is now 25 watts.

If we were to look at the two signals described above (1Vrms and 2Vrms) on an oscilloscope (a device that shows voltage relative to time), you would see the following:
AmplitudeJust a reminder: The RMS value of a sine wave is 0.707 times its peak value. In the case of these waveforms, the peak values would be 1.414 and 2.818 volts.

The Concept of Frequency

Signals Containing Multiple Frequencies

Let’s step back a bit and look at the fundamentals of analyzing the frequency content of a signal. The graph you see below shows a single 1kHz signal.

AmplitudeThe “stuff” you see at the bottom of the screen is noise. Every signal contains some amount of noise. For this graph, we can see that the 1kHz signal is recorded at a level of 0dB and that the loudest noise component is almost 170dB quieter. This low amplitude makes the noise level irrelevant.

What can be difficult to understand is that a signal can be, and often is, made up of many different frequencies. This graph shows an audio signal that contains 1kHz and 2kHz signals.

AmplitudeAlmost every audio signal we hear comprises an infinite number of frequencies. The relative level of these frequencies is what makes one person’s voice sound different than another’s or makes a piano sound different than a guitar.

These two frequency response graphs show a piano and a guitar both playing Middle C with a frequency of 256 Hz.

The red line represents the response of the guitar, showing a peak at 256 Hz, a strong harmonic at 512 Hz and an intermodulation peak at 768Hz.

The green line shows the frequency response of a piano playing the same 256 Hz middle C note. It has significantly more harmonic content with harmonics and intermodulation peaks above and below the fundamental.

Audio Measurement Waveforms

Two waveforms are commonly used to test audio equipment and audio signals. The first is called a white noise signal. This signal includes random audio signals at all frequencies up to the cutoff of the recording medium (in this case, 22.05kHz or our 44.1kHz sampling rate WAV file). Each frequency is the same in terms of amplitude. We can use this signal along with a real-time analyzer to measure the frequency response of audio components.

Here is the frequency response plot of a white noise signal:

AmplitudeAnother important signal is called pink noise. We use this signal when measuring the frequency response of a speaker. Unlike white noise that contains signals at equal levels at all frequencies, pink noise has an equal amount of signal energy per octave. When looked at in the frequency domain, the level decreases at a rate of 10dB per octave as frequency increases.

AmplitudeWhen you play pink noise through a set of speakers and measure the response with a microphone, you will be looking for a flat waveform.

Frequency Response of a Loudspeaker

Let’s take a high-quality, 6.5-inch coaxial speaker with a specified efficiency of 89dB when supplied with pink noise at a level of 2.83V and measured at a distance of 1 meter. A value of 2.83 volts happens to work out to 2 watts using the P = V^2/R equation.

While this specification works when we feed the speaker a pink noise signal, it doesn’t tell us how loud the speaker is at a specific frequency. For that, we need a frequency response graph.

AmplitudeThis frequency response graph shows us how much sound energy this speaker will produce when driven by a pink noise signal.

This particular driver has a gentle dip around 1kHz, some emphasis in the mid-bass region between 80 and 150Hz and a gently rising response above 2kHz to improve off-axis performance. In a car, this speaker sounds amazing!

The Bonus Signal – A Square Wave

OK, strap on your space suit, thinking cap or whatever will help you understand the following. We are going to look at a square wave. A square wave is a waveform that combines harmonics (multiples) of a fundamental frequency to create a waveform of a specific shape. The waveform appears to have two values, one high and one low. It’s for this reason that people incorrectly assume that these are Direct Current (DC) levels.

The formula to create a square wave is made up of multiple odd-ordered harmonics of the fundamental frequency. If you have a 30Hz square wave and look at it in the frequency domain, you can see these harmonics.

When an amplifier is pushed beyond its output voltage limit, it creates a square wave. There is no DC content in the signal, but it IS full of high-frequency harmonic content.

Using an Excel spreadsheet created by Alexander Weiner from Germany, here are six graphs that show how a square wave is created by adding odd-ordered harmonics to a fundamental signal. For a perfect waveform, we need an infinite number of harmonics.

AmplitudeThe yellow line shows a single sine wave with no harmonics.

AmplitudeThe yellow waveform adds the third harmonic of the fundamental frequency.

AmplitudeThe yellow waveform adds the third and fifth harmonic of the fundamental frequency.

AmplitudeThe yellow waveform adds the third, fifth and seventh harmonic of the fundamental frequency.

AmplitudeThe yellow waveform shows the 100 odd-ordered harmonics as well as the fundamental frequency.

AmplitudeIn this graph, we have the fundamental frequency and 256 odd-ordered harmonics added together.

If you have ever wondered why tweeters seem to the be the first to fail when an amp is driven into clipping or distortion, the reason is the addition of high-frequency information to the audio signal. Where we might have been feeding one or two watts to a tweeter with music, a square wave or a waveform containing significant harmonics contains a great deal more high-frequency information.

We hope this wasn’t too much to information for a single article. Understanding waveform amplitude and frequency content are crucial to any discussion of a mobile audio system. In our next article, we are going to discuss the flow of electricity through a conductor and the associated magnetic field that is created.

After a BRUTAL experience with Visions in Abbotsford, I went to see the guys at Certified. Bought from here before (remote starter), and my work buys all the van decks from here too. These guys really know what they are doing, if they say you need certain parts for an install, believe them. They are very knowledgeable about the product they carry and VERY knowledgeable about the different vehicle install requirements. They took the time to listen to my needs and requirements and put together several packages that would suit my needs in varying price ranges. A SUPER bunch of professionals.

Had these fine lads put together a security system for our food truck. It was installed on time and as quoted , we couldn't be happier ! Ma's secret recipe from the old country will be safe for years to come .

Stereo Upgrade for Chevy 05
Shawn did a great job describing the product to myself and ensured it would meet my requirements. The auto starter they installed in my car functions great and has every option I wanted. I will definitely be back to Certified Autosound & Security!
Benn S.
They did a great job on some custom dash work and installing under car LED's for me. Highly recommend their work! I will be back for more!

I just had speakers, an amp, and a 10" sub installed this past week in my 2015 Jeep Wrangler . I was especially impressed by the installation of my sub. I was a bit concerned the sub was going to take up additional room in my already small cargo area but left it in the capable hands of Nick and his crew. Much to my surprise the guys worked their magic and created a custom install that blew me away!! Nick and his crew went above and beyond for me, they stayed within my budget and within the time allotted for the install. This is the 2nd vehicle in our household to have work done here in the past few months and would recommend Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford to anyone considering an upgrade to their car audio.

Jamming in my Jeep
I had a problem with my recent install with Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford as I was getting a nasty popping sound every time I turned off my stereo. I thought it was a problem with a new amp but it turned out to be the stereo that was causing a surge in power when turned off. I had previously got this installed by them as well and surprisingly they replaced it with a new unit under warranty, free of charge! Now everything sounds the way it should and I couldn't be happier! Thanks so much guys:) 11/10 Would come again

Troubleshooting
If you are serious about car audio , then go no further. The absolute professionalism of Nick and his crew is amazing. Nick worked hard to hit my budget, designed a plain but sexy hard pounding wife approved sound system. A switch in just the right place, to turn off the subs and keep me married was just the trick, but when I'm buy myself , well let's just say .... it will be the deaf of me. Thanks Nick and gang.?

I just had my 2015 Touareg Sportline “aurally rehabilitated” at Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford and I must say, of all the cars I have owned and that is many, the sound post-rehab is the best! I purposely purchased the lowest-end Touareg without the sunroof and Dynaudio for a reason. First, I do not like sunroofs (they are prone to leaking, wind intrusion, decreased safety margin in case of a rollover, etc.) But the basic Touareg has the problem that the audio system is mediocre at best. Being an audiophile, this was clearly not going to work for me. Therefore, I contacted probably half a dozen “high end” automotive audio refurbishers in both the U.S. and Canada, all the way from San Jose, CA to Toronto.. I also investigated the local talent in Vancouver, including one long-standing “stand out” who shall go unnamed and yet another local “expert.” I regret to say that none of these options were acceptable and for different reasons. It is not that all were incompetent (two were, the “local talent.” The U.S. options wanted as much as US$15,000 for their work and the lowest local talent wanted over $5,000 in Canadian dollars. I just intuitively knew there had to be a better deal within driving range. And finally, after much searching and inquiring and serious research I came upon Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford, a literal half-hour in moderate to severe traffic from where i live. I spoke initially with Nick Pocklington, a veritable expert in sound staging and DSP (digital signal processing). He veritably was the first HONEST automotive audio technician I had come across. He told me (honestly) that I did not have to spend a year;s salary to make my existing sound system sound REALLY good, but that what I needed most was a good amplifier and DSP digital signal processor) and I would be amazed at the results. So he made some sagacious recommendations regarding specifically what I needed and would be the result. I, of course, had to conclude whether he was “talking shop” or was on the level. He seemed uncommonly severe and so I decided to take a chance on Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford. I spent about seven hours there while they worked on my “Touareg” amd by the time all was done I will have to say the sound is SUPERB, even with the original VW speakers. How is it superb? There is now central staging of the musician/musical band, the bass, mid-range and trelble are accurate and where they should be, and the instrument stagings are SUPERB. To be precise, what should be coming from the right side should be and is and the same for the left. The instruments are all where they should be, in other words. This is the magic of DSP.. So I want to thank Nick Pockinglon, the maestro, Jeff Wong, the wonderfully polite and hospitable gentleman who attended to all my needs while at Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford, and Scott, the man who did the insall, for an absolutely incredible job. You can pay much more for your audio upgrade, but you will get much less. Go with the best. Go with Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford.

I have dealt with Future Shop and Best Buy before, they were a nightmare. I went to Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford to get stereo taken out, and wound up getting a new system from them. I talked with Nick and Jeff and they were great, no high pressure sales. They gave me a good price and are both nice guys, none of your typical salesman b.s. Jason did a great job of install and between him and Nick, they showed me how to work it, as I am a dinosaur when it comes to new technology. It's a nice clean shop and a nice store. I recommend these guys and will only get stuff from them in the future.

Stopped in without an appointment and they got me in and out with a car installation super fast, very friendly and provided excellent customer service. Highly recommend them without hesitation.

Stereo system
When our car stereo began to malfunction, we decided we needed to replace it. The radio would turn on as soon as we started the car, and none of the controls would work. Canadian Tire didn’t have a suitable one in stock but also doesn’t install stereos; the clerk recommended Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford. Best Buy and London Drugs no longer sell automobile sound systems; both recommended Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford. When we went there, Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford had the simple system we needed at a reasonable price. But, intrigued by our system’s problem, Certified Autosound and Security's Jeff Wong took a look at our old unit and managed to reset it, at no charge. The stereo now works fine. However, when it does finally pack it in, there is no question about where we are going to go for a replacement—Certified Autosound and Security.

I came in with a problem with my stereo thinking I needed to buy a new one but the problem was fixed free of charge and I didn't buy a thing! Great service and I will definitely be back!

This by far is the best company I have ever dealt with.Second to none in all categories.

Best Place ever.
Very pleased with my backup camera and Carplay / Bluetooth stereo set up. When I first started phoning around was drawn to the customer service with the initial phone call. It continued once I entered the show room allowing me to make an informed choice. No pressure sales ------so glad though I decided to have my CarPlay radio hooked up to my steering wheel controls. (even though the Carplay screen was within easy reach) Very happy with my steering wheel controls!!!Highly recommend Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford.

Big thanks to the guys at Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford! I went into the shop on a saturday afternoon with my 08 Sierra and came out with exactly what I wanted installed and ready to rock by Monday at 4pm. Couldn't be happier with my new system the guys listened to what I had in mind, threw a system together they thought would meet my needs and thats exactly what I got for a great price!! I was walking to and from my appointment and they even had the courtesy to give me a call with plenty of warning exactly when my truck would be finished. Punctual, great service! Thanks again to the guys at Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford.

The gentlemen at Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford have installed an overhead monitor and a Clarion sound system in my vehicle to help entertain our many little ones. The kids love being able to watch movies and music calms the savage beast:) Recently the youngest inserted coins into the disc deck which interfered with everything. Thankfully, the coins didn't short circuit and the technicians removed the coins for me. Timely, polite, informative, caring, professional. I will be returning to Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford for anything I need in the future.

Mommy's little helper
My experience with the team at Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford has been nothing less than perfect. I was pointed in their direction about 3 years ago and couldn't be happier that I did. They go over and above everything that I have asked them to do and always keep me well informed of anything they think can be improved without hurting the pocketbook and as a customer that is all you can ask for. It's nice to be able to go into a shop and actually want to hang out with the guys and even though they are quite busy they will give me the time to answer any of my many, many, many questions. As for the outcome and delivery of their work, it definitely speaks for itself... just sit in my car now and man am I beyond excited with the results! I was having a lot of problems with the first part of my build (done elsewhere). Nick, in particular took control of the situation and helped turn my system into what it is today. Scott's attention to detail on the install speaks in volume for the overall type of service that you will receive at Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford. Tony and Jeff have also given me a serious amount of valuable advise when picking and choosing the different gear for my build whether it be an alarm, head unit, amp, speakers or DSP. I highly recommend going to Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford for all your mobile needs, the return in service will speak for it self, guaranteed!

Certified's delivery in service speaks in volume
Went in to get a full sound system in my car, was helped by a man named Devin. Was super helpful with keeping in my budget but also giving me everything I needed. Would recommend to anyone looking to get any sort of audio work done on their vehicle!

I've had 12 decks in my car and these guys were the only ones to set my clock and redo my radio preset for my Sirius. It's the little things that stand out. The Mic placement hiding it up near the rear view mirror was ninja!!

Nick was great! He re-calibrated my automatic start/lock system on my key fob for my Ford truck. Ford broke it and refused to do anything about it. Nick to the rescue! I live on Vancouver Island and came all the way over to Abbotsford and it was sure worth the trip. Kudos for Nick!!! I have also purchased speakers and had them installed by Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford. Excellent service at all times. Thanks again.

Dodge Caravan DVD & Kenwood In Dash Receiver Last Year I installed Kenwood - In-Dash Receiver, Remote Start, Backup Camera with the team at Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford, Abbotsford. I travelled all the way from Pitt Meadows to Abbotsford to get the thing done. Their price seems to be reasonable and their installation service was very professional. They installed all the above mentioned service within a quick frame of time and doing neat and efficient job. It’s still working great. I am really satisfied with their Professional work and great service. Nick was the person taken care of all my request (from the quotation until the installation work) and he has done a great job. I will highly recommend this place to my friends..

I phoned Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford to get a quote to put my stereo into my van which is a 2002 Chevy Venture. When Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford informed me that my vehicle had the vehicles lights and buzzers running through the radio so I would need additional hardware to bypass this and the total cost would be more than $200, I was upset at Chevy. Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford installed the unit and at the time of install found that the previous owner had already had an after market stereo in it, so the extra parts were there. It would have been easy for them to charge me for the unneeded parts. Integrity in business is so admirable and I'll definitely be back to Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford. I am waiting to afford an amplifier and sub woofer. I've recommended them on FB and will definitely spread the word through people I know. I have been burnt so many times in the past. I returned the next day just to thank them for their honesty and integrity. 2 thumbs up!
Mark
Amazing service and reasonable prices. Been having issues with crime in the area I live in, so put out leads for quotes for an alarm system in my truck. Got back some quotes but needed a quick installation. Being a licensed mechanic I could of probably did it myself but nahhhh find a shop, reasonably priced and let the pros do it. Sure I got lower quotes from other places, but Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford was able to squeeze me in in short order thankfully. They put in a nice basic Viper system no bells or whistles like I needed. They did just what I needed and being a mechanic I went looking at the work, all I can say is nice and tidy and correctly done. Would I go back to expand the audio system ? I'd have to say yes, and no issues recommending them to my friends when it becomes more than me wiring a deck in the dash or basic speaker replacement. Thank you guys for making my experience a good one and also for getting it done in short order, it's much appreciated.
Ken James
Thank You !! Big boom. Small space. These guys can do the impossible. Reasonable plan set up for this luddite by Mr. Pocklington. He could have sold me way more than I need ... but he didn't. The installation was a three person thing. All day. Again ... amazing. I've been driving this little car on some very rough roads recently. Not a rattle. Not a squeak. No snap-crackle-pop. The install is rock-solid. Thanks guys. Well done. I recommend you highly. And that kid I first spoke with ... on the phone ... he should get a raise. Rick Maddocks

Great Work, Excellent Customer Service I own a 2007 Toyota Matrix. I bought my JVC deck, 6.5" Dragster speakers, and 10" Bazooka tube at different suppliers that were clearing product out. Having installed decks and speakers before I was considering putting everything in myself. With the weather being the way it has been, and not having an interior space to work, I gave up after installing the deck. I was referred to Tony at Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford by a friend. He was more than happy to install my stuff, and his installer did a great job. The install on the speakers and subwoofer were top notch professional. The showroom is great and Tony is wealth of information about what is current in the car stereo industry. Overall a very pleasant experience. I recommend highly!!!!

Completely Outstanding I was recommended to go into Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford to help with getting the parts I needed to get a 12" sub installed in my Honda. Nick was unbelievably helpful! He managed to find out I had purchased the incorrect wiring kit I had already bought elsewehere, and saved me 70$ with getting a new one. And once I had the Sub installed by my friend privately he tuned it to make it sound tip top absolutely free of charge. Great business, trustworthy employees, best you'll find in the Lower Mainland.

Awesome Customer Service! Just wanted to pass on a big thanks to Nick for helping me select a new system for my car that made sense, was reasonably priced and sounds awesome! He even fixed my drivers side mirror when he had the door apart free of charge! I have worked in Customer Service for 28 years and the guys at Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford have Customer Service NAILED! Thanks again. Gord G from Langley.

We traveled from Alberta to Langley for our daughters grad. I found their website and contacted Tony. They were more then accommodating to set an appointment, get the job done as fast as they could. They didn't try to sell me more then I asked for and I got a great system as a gift for my daughter. On the other side, my wife commented that the bathroom was exceptional, a reflection of the type of work they do. Thanks JM

Fantastic! Heard about Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford. Went in to buy a system and I was blown away. My car sounds fantastic !!!
