A client from Chilliwack recently visited Certified Autosound and Security to inquire about a 2017 Polaris Slingshot audio system upgrade. The client was interested in upgrading the basic radio that came with the three-wheeler. After we discussed several features that are available and we demonstrated the performance benefits of upgrading the speakers, adding an amplifier and installing a subwoofer, the original plan expanded into an impressive sound system worthy of this unique vehicle.
Polaris Slingshot Radio Upgrade
If you aren’t familiar with the Slingshot, it’s a three-wheeled motorcycle with side-by-side sit-down seating positions. A 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine that drives the rear wheel powers the compact and lightweight vehicle.
This is the second Slingshot the client has owned and based on his experience with the first, he knew he wanted to improve the sound system. We talked about upgrading the radio to something with Bluetooth audio streaming and navigation functions. After looking at the Kenwood DNX695S multimedia receiver on our display board, he decided it was the perfect fit.
We used a Metra 99-9721 mounting kit to secure the radio in the stock dash location. The kit includes a smoked acrylic dust-and-splash shield that helps protect the radio. We wired the factory-installed backup camera into the Kenwood radio so the client can see behind the vehicle when parking or maneuvering.
JL Audio Marine Speaker Upgrade
Because the Slingshot doesn’t meet the requirements for a passenger car, it is considered a motorcycle and as such, occupants must wear helmets. To clearly reproduce whatever music the client chooses, our plan was to add a set of JL Audio MX650 6.5-inch coaxial speakers. The client mentioned that he liked the idea of the SSV rear speaker enclosures from Slingmods. These compact ABS enclosures fit inside the fiberglass trim pieces behind the driver and passenger seat and don’t take up any space inside the cabin.
Slingshot Audio System Subwoofer
The client’s original plan didn’t include the addition of a subwoofer. We happened to have a spare driver’s-side JL Audio SB-POL-SLINGSUBD/10W3v3-2 Stealthbox enclosure at the store, so we explained the benefit of a dedicated subwoofer and how it not only would improve the bass response of the sound system but also would improve the performance of the midrange drivers. After getting a chance to look at the amazing build quality of the enclosure, the client was sold on the idea.
The Stealthbox is manufactured in JL Audio’s head office in Miramar, Florida. The enclosure is constructed from fiberglass and is finished in a water-resistant coating that matches the trim interior of the Slingshot perfectly. JL Audio includes brackets with the enclosure to secure it into the storage compartment behind the driver’s seat.
High-Efficiency Audio System Amplifier
The upgraded speakers and subwoofer are powered by a JL Audio MX400/4 amplifier. This amp can produce an impressive 75 watts per channel for the new rear speakers and 200 watts to the new system subwoofer. We wired the amp to the deck so that the crossovers and level controls built into the Kenwood unit would make system tuning and adjustment quick and easy.
With the amp mounted and power wire run directly to the battery, the last step in upgrading this Slingshot audio system was to tune the amp for the chosen source unit and speakers. The tuning process is an important step and one that isn’t always given the attention it deserves by some retailers. Perfectly adjusting the crossovers and level controls not only ensures smooth and natural frequency response from the sound system, but it also improves its reliability as well.
Polaris Slingshot Sound System Upgrade
After two days working on the Slingshot, it was ready to go back to the client. He was thrilled with the quality and attention to detail of our installation and loved the way the system sounds. We reviewed how to use the new Kenwood receiver and helped pair his smartphone to the radio to stream music.
