A new client from Chilliwack, BC, came to Driven Audio to upgrade his 2010 22′ Monterey audio system and add lighting. We love working on boats, so we were thrilled to get together with him and explore upgrade options. The boat had an existing marine audio system but was lacking in several areas, including volume, clarity, bass and connectivity to his smartphone. There was also a serious lack of lighting, making it unsafe to move around the boat at night. After spending considerable time with the client, our team worked up what we felt was his best solution, and he loved our idea. At that point, we set him up with an installation appointment.
Kenwood Marine Radio Offers Numerous Audio Sources
Right off the bat, we knew we needed to change out the existing radio. We selected a Kenwood KMRM312BT for several reasons. It gave him both USB and Bluetooth connectivity, so all of his portable devices could easily be played. Plus, it allowed us to add a SiriusXM tuner so he can enjoy satellite radio while on the water. As the Kenwood unit was smaller than the previous radio, we made a custom mounting plate out of white starboard to give it a classy, finished look.
Kenwood Remote Controller For Fingertip Radio Control
We added a Kenwood KCARC55MR controller at the helm to give him control over his music from the opposite side of the boat.
JL Audio Marine Speakers For Great Sounding Waterproof Audio
Next, we changed out the existing front and rear speakers in the boat with JL Audio M650CCX-CG-WH 6.5” speakers, giving the boat a huge jump in sound quality. JL is famous for over-building their marine products, make theirs the most reliable products on the water. Driven Audio is proud to be a business partner with JL Audio.
Great Sounding Low End From JL Audio
Now, what good is better sound without some good low-end bass? That seems to be the single biggest thing lacking in boats today. We added a JL Audio M10IB-CG-WH 10” subwoofer, so now you can feel the music as well as hear it.
JL Audio Amplifier Provides Full System Power for this Monterey Audio Upgrade
If you are going to upgrade your marine audio system and make it sound better, you have to be able to hear it at speed on the water. That calls for an amplifier. We went back to JL Audio, choosing their M700/5 amplifier. It uses an extremely efficient design and puts out more than 700 watts of clean power, so now concert-level sound is a reality on the water.
Auxiliary Battery Ensures Safe Starting For The Trip Home
Anyone who owns a boat knows that they spend plenty of time relaxing at their destination, so we designed the system to run off a second battery. That eliminated the possibility of the stereo system draining his main battery and leaving him stranded, which can be dangerous out on the water. Now our client can enjoy relaxing at places like Cultus Lake or Harrison Lake, completely confident that his boat will start when it is time to head home.
Accent Lighting For Safety And Style
The final touch for this build was to add blue LED accent lighting. We made custom plexiglass rings around the speakers that give off a beautiful glow of blue light, and we added blue lighting in strategic areas of the boat, making it safe to move around at night. The new lighting also gave the boat a classy, appealing look that truly set off the cosmetics of the interior.
When the client came to pick up his Monterey, he was thrilled with the final product. From the sound quality to the fit and finish, he was loving all of it. And that made our day.
