A client and friend of one of our technicians dropped into Certified Autosound and Security in Chilliwack to discuss a classic Chevy truck audio system. He wanted something that would sound good, but not interfere with the functionality or integrity of the vehicle. We inspected the vehicle and proposed a simple yet elegant audio system solution that would fit behind the seat of this classic pickup. The customer loved the plan and gave us the go-ahead to schedule an appointment to complete the project.
Shallow-Mount Subwoofer System
We started by measuring the space behind the seat to design and construct a subwoofer enclosure that would house a pair of Audison APS 8 D 8-inch subwoofers. The enclosure is wedge-shaped with a very shallow angle on the front panel. The Audison Prima 8-inch subwoofer is designed specifically to offer excellent linearity and low-frequency output in extremely compact enclosures. Once constructed, we wrapped the enclosure in a durable black trunk-liner style of carpet.
Rockford Fosgate Pickup Truck Speaker Solution
We created a pair of compact speaker enclosures for a pair of Rockford Fosgate Punch Series P1692 6×9-inch speakers. These speakers feature a two-way design that uses a 0.75-inch PEI-dome tweeter and a mineral-filled polypropylene woofer cone with a butyl rubber surround for excellent longevity. The speaker enclosures are attached securely to either side of the subwoofer enclosure.
Classic Chevy Truck Audio System Amplifier
The client chose a five-channel Rockford Fosgate Power Series TM1000X5ad amplifier to power the sound system. The subwoofer section of the amp provides a total of 600 watts of power to the pair of 8-inch Audison subwoofers. We wired the remainder of the amp as a two-channel to provide the 6x9s with as much as 200 watts each.
The amp is mounted against the back wall of the truck on a carpeted panel just above the passenger-side subwoofer. All the wiring to and from the amp is wrapped with automotive-grade cloth tape to prevent any buzzes or rattles.
Custom Audio System Trim Panel
We wanted this pickup truck audio system to have some style, and not just be a collection of gear behind the back seat. The plan was for our team to create a custom trim panel for the subwoofer and speakers that would conceal the amp as well. The trim panel for the subs and speakers was cut from a single panel and fit snugly to the edges and floor of the truck using automotive body filler. Once it had hardened, we sanded the face of the panel smooth and rounded the edge slightly for a neat and tidy look.
Next, we added an accent panel to the top of the trim panel that would extend it up and over the amplifier. Again, we fit the panel to the truck using body filler and sanded everything flush. A large oval cutout in the accent panel is home to a back-lit acrylic plastic panel with the Chevy bowtie emblem sandblasted into it. Flexible LED lighting around the perimeter of the plastic panel illuminates the emblem with the flick of a switch.
After chamfering the edges of the speaker cutouts on our router table, we finished the accent panel in black vinyl to match the bench seat in the truck.
Bluetooth Source Unit
The client supplied a Bluetooth source for the system that is very similar to the JL Audio MBT-CRX. We mounted the controller beside the steering column and connected the output directly to the Rockford amplifier. The controller allows the client to stream audio from his smartphone directly into the sound system while taking up very little space. Buttons for volume adjustments and track up and down functions are included on the face of the controller.
British Columbia’s Classic Car and Truck Experts
After a few days of work, we had the system installed and everything was configured and tested to make sure it sounds great at any volume level. With the seat folded back, the new sound system is nearly invisible from the outside of the truck, except for the bowtie logo.
The Abbotsford-based client was thrilled with the work Certified Autosound and Security did on his classic Chevy truck audio system and loved the way it sounds.
