A client from Chilliwack reached out to the team at Certified Autosound and Security for our expertise in installing a custom stereo system in his new 2019 Can-Am RC Sport side-by-side UTV. The vehicle came without a stereo, and since it’s a new design, there aren’t any audio upgrade kits available for it yet. Our fabrication team was excited to create something unique for the client, and he gave us the go-ahead to schedule the three-day installation.
2019 RC Sport Radio Installation
The project started with our team brainstorming a plan to mount a radio in the dash of the RC Sport. As mentioned, this is a new design and as such, there is no radio mounting kit available. The team took a Rockford Fosgate PMX2 mounting kit from the previous generation RC Sport and decided to mold it into the dash opening. After protecting the plastic trim with heavy-duty masking tape, we made an ABS mounting plate and several panels to hold a pre-2019 radio mount in place. With everything glued together, we filled in the open areas with fiberglass-reinforced plastic body filler and sanded it smooth. Once the bodywork process was done and the new pod was smooth, we finished the radio mounting pod in truck bedliner coating for a tough and durable finish. The new pod mounts to the dash using stainless steel fasteners.
The Rockford PMX2 digital media receiver features a 2.7-inch color display, AM/FM/Weatherband radio reception and Bluetooth audio streaming so the client can play music from his phone. A USB port allows for playback of MP3 or WMA files from a USB memory stick or music stored on a compatible smartphone. We added a USB and auxiliary input port to the dash so that the client can charge his phone or play music from any device that has a headphone jack.
Rockford Fosgate System Amplifier
The output of the PMX2 feeds a Rockford Fosgate TM400X4ad four-channel amplifier. We made a mounting bracket that would secure the amp behind the glove box on the passenger side of the vehicle. The mounting panel is attached to the vehicle with stainless steel hardware to ensure nothing will ever corrode.
Each of the four channels is rated to produce 100 watts of power to ensure the client’s music is reproduced with clarity and detail, even when the volume is cranked! The amp is part of Rockford’s marine product series and, as such, features a corrosion-resistant chassis and a conformal coating on the main circuit board to resist damage from high-humidity environments.
As you can see, all the wiring to and from the amplifier is protected with split-loom tubing and secured in place so it won’t buzz or rattle while the owner is bombing down the trails.
Side-by-Side UTV Speakers
For front speakers, we installed a set of Rockford Punch-Series PM2652B 6.5-inch coaxial speakers on a set of plastic mounting adapters in the kick-panel area of the UTV. Just as with the dash kit, there are no application-specific speaker mounts available for the RC Sport as yet, so our team had to get creative with the installation.
For the rear speakers, we used a set of Rockford Fosgate PM2652W-B Punch Marine 6.5-inch wakeboard tower speaker pods. These enclosed speakers are mounted to the tubing of the roll cage behind the driver and passenger.
Powersports Audio Specialists
With the audio equipment installed, our installation team wrapped up the project by configuring the sensitivity and crossover controls on the Rockford amp so that the system will play any source loudly and without distortion. This is a key step in ensuring that the sound system will be reliable and free from background noises or hiss.
The client returned to Certified Autosound and Security, eager to hear the new stereo system in his Can-Am RC Sport. He hopped in right away and within seconds had a huge smile on his face. It plays nice and loud and sounds great! If you are interested in upgrading your side-by-side UTV with a new stereo, drop by one of our stores in Chilliwack, Maple Ridge or Abbotsford.
