A client from Langley recently contacted Certified Autosound and Security in Abbottsford about a 2015 GMC Sierra towing safety solution. The client hauls a large DRV Luxury Suites fifth wheel RV and wanted a way to see what was behind the large trailer. The client had researched many options while traveling from campsite to campsite and wanted a solution that would be reliable and easy to use. After inspecting the Sierra pickup and the RV, we came up with a rear-vision camera system design that would allow the client to see everything and operate the vehicle safely.
Fifth Wheel RV Camera System
We based the camera package we designed around a Rydeen CM-R1000P Pro-Series commercial-grade camera. The camera is mounted at the top of the RV and, thanks to its wide 120-degree field-of-vision, everything from the scooter on the back of the RV to oncoming vehicles well behind the trailer are clearly visible. Our team ran the wiring for the camera into the RV and routed it neatly along the factory wire channels to keep it safe. The wiring is completely hidden from sight inside the RV and is only visible where it connects to the camera under the rear marker lights.
This heavy-duty commercial-grade camera offers almost 500 lines of resolution to ensure that even the smallest of objects are easy to see. The camera features 18 built-in infrared LED transmitters to illuminate the area behind the trailer at night. Even in absolute darkness, everything behind the vehicle will be clearly visible on the screen. A built-in sun-shade integrated into the mounting bracket improves the performance of the camera. Finally, the camera includes an IP69K rating. This rating means that the camera can withstand a high-pressure, high-temperature water spray without any issues.
GMC Sierra Towing Safety Solution
As the GMC Sierra will be driven without the RV attached, we needed a way to provide a quick-disconnect between the truck and trailer. We used a Zone Defense CBL.359A.2 coiled cable kit to make it easy for the client to connect the video signal from the camera to the truck. The Zone Defense kit includes two waterproof connectors and a flexible coiled cable. We mounted one of the connectors near the trailer attachment point and the other on the left side of the truck bed for easy access.
All of the electrical connections to the quick-connect points are protected with water-resistant heat-shrink tubing to ensure the system will function reliably for decades.
Factory Dash Display Integration
The last piece of the project was to run the camera cabling from the bed of the truck to the factory screen. With all the wiring run safely and securely under the truck bed and into the cab, we installed a NAV-TV KIT629 interface to feed the image from the fifth wheel camera into the factory 8-inch screen in the dash. We configured the system so that the client can pull up the camera image whenever he wants to check on his scooter or see if anything or anyone is behind the trailer.
The NAV-TV interface works in conjunction with the factory backup camera wiring to add a second video input to the factory source unit. The KIT629 is compatible with Chevy, GMC and Cadillac vehicles that feature the 4- or 8-inch GM MyLink infotainment system.
Vehicle Safety Systems Specialists
With the system installed and tested, it was time for the client to return to Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford to see the results for himself. The client loved the GMC Sierra towing safety solution we installed and was thrilled with the fit and finish of the camera and cabling. Knowing that he was satisfied with the installation, we reviewed how to use the system and how to connect and disconnect the camera wiring.
