A client visited our booth at the Vancouver boat show this past spring to learn about audio upgrades that might be available for his new Yamaha 242X jet boat. We gave him a tour of our slightly over-the-top Malibu 22VLX that we had on display at the show. He loved the lighting and was amazed at how loud the system played without distorting. After a full summer of boating, the client wanted to upgrade the existing sound system on the boat before putting it away for winter.
Wet Sounds Tower Speaker Upgrade
The client told us the existing tower speakers sounded great in the boat but started to get drowned out when he Wake Skates at more than 40 feet behind the boat. We remedied this by installing a set of Wet Sounds REV410 dual 10-inch tower speakers on the tow bar. The REV 410 enclosures feature a pair of 10-inch midrange drivers and a Horn-Loaded Compression Driver to project sound more than 80 feet behind the boat.
We added a pair of Rockford Fosgate TM400X2ad amplifiers to power the new tower speakers. Each amp drives one of the enclosures with an impressive 400 watts of power. The amps are mounted to the factory amp rack inside the driver helm.
JL Audio Marine Subwoofer Upgrade
The next upgrade was to remove the Wet Sounds subwoofer that came with the boat and install a JL Audio M10IB4-SG-TB 10-inch on the passenger side of the boat. We added a second, identical 10-inch sub to the driver’s side of the boat. Not only do the JL subs handle more power, but they also play louder with less distortion.
The JL subs are powered by a Rockford Fosgate TM750X1bd mono subwoofer amplifier that is rated to deliver up to 750 watts to the pair of drivers. Our installation team mounted the sub amp below the tower speaker amps on the factory amp rack. We also upgraded the power distribution system with T-Spec fuse holders and ground distribution blocks. As you can see from the photos, we bundled all the wiring for the amps neatly and protected it with split-loom tubing.
LED Marine Lighting Enhancement
After seeing the lighting we installed in the Malibu boat we had at the Vancouver boat show, the client knew he wanted to upgrade the lighting in his boat as well as improve sound quality. We added a set of Wet Sounds LED KIT REV10-RGB acrylic plastic lighting rings to each of the midrange drivers on the tower speakers and ran the wiring to a Heise RGB LED lighting controller on the amp rack.
We added a total of 20 RGB light pods to the interior of the boat. There are 16 white pods and four black pods to match the paintwork inside the boat. The three LED controllers in the boat ensure all the lights are bright and vivid in whatever color the client wants them.
The client provided a set of wake lights to light up the water behind the boat. Because the transom of the boat isn’t flat, one of our technicians created a set of acrylic plastic mounts to attach to the underside of the swim platform. The forward edge of the mounts is angled so they don’t affect water flow when the boat is traveling at low to medium speeds. According to the manufacturer, each light can illuminate up to 60 feet in clear water.
Marine Electrical System Fortification
The last step was to add a dual-bank battery charger to the boat. This intelligent charger ensures the boat batteries are topped up and ready for a day of fun on the water. It also includes a solar charging panel that can be placed on the Bimini top to trickle-charge the batteries when the boat isn’t connected to shore power.
Yamaha 242X Audio System Tuning and Delivery
With all the amplifiers configured for their respective speakers, it was time for the client to return to Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford to check out his new Yamaha 242X audio system. He loved the way it looked in our installation bay! We took the boat outside so he could experience just how loud it would play. Justifiably, he was stunned by the improvements we made.
