A long-time client from Kelowna recently contacted Certified Autosound and Security about a 2017 Lamborghini Huracán radar detector and laser defense system. Members of the Certified team had done two Valentine One installations for the client on previous Lamborghinis. He wanted us to install the Valentine system in his new Huracán, but we felt it was time for a technology upgrade. After we explained the advanced features and protection benefits of the Escort MAX Ci, the client agreed to the project. We hitched our enclosed trailer to our truck and drove to Kelowna to pick up the Huracán and bring it back to our shop to begin the installation.
Escort MAX Ci Custom Installation
We based the Huracán radar detector system on the Escort MAX Ci platform. After finding a suitable and secure mounting location for the system control module, our fabrication team set to work installing the system display and control panel. The client wanted everything within easy reach and wanted us to create a mounting solution that looked customized rather than “bolted on.”
We integrated the colour display for the MAX Ci into a custom-fabricated acrylic plastic pod that mounts to the top of the steering wheel column. Our team created the pod using layers of cast acrylic plastic and molded it to the display bezel and the contoured plastic trim panel. Once the fit was perfect, we sprayed the pod with a textured black paint that matches the vehicle interior.
We flush-mounted the control panel for the radar detection system into the right side of the steering column. We cut the trim piece to fit the control and mounted it from the rear. The client can quickly and easily reach down from the steering wheel to deactivate or make adjustments to the laser defense system.
Lamborghini Huracán Radar Receivers
The MAX Ci system comes with an advanced twin-antenna radar receiver that uses a high-speed digital signal processor to analyze the radio frequency information. Collision avoidance, radar-based cruise control and blind spot monitoring systems can produce signals that will cause false alarms with many radar systems. Escort’s IVT filter and GPS-based speed adjustments minimize inaccurate detections. The front radar receiver is mounted behind the front grille and is invisible from the exterior of the vehicle.
Laser Radar Sensor Installation
The focus of this radar system is to protect the client from the dreaded DragonEye Lidar guns that are used here in British Columbia. To provide the best possible coverage, we installed four laser transceivers on the front of the Huracán. We located two sensors in the outer corners of the center grille and mounted an additional pair of sensors in custom pods in the outer cooling vents.
The pods are constructed similarly to the display inside the vehicle. Our team laminated together several pieces of cast acrylic plastic before creating an opening for the laser transmitter and receiver LEDs. Once we had the shape the way we wanted it, we molded the pod to the car. We wrapped each corner of the front bumper with several layers of 3M industrial masking tape, then placed each pod in place and applied a layer of quick-drying urethane around the edges to conform to the vehicle perfectly. Once the urethane cured, we removed the pods and sanded the edges smooth. The last step was to apply a layer of primer to the finished pods and coat them with a layer of matte black paint so they would blend with the grille and sensor.
Premium Radar Detection Solution
After we finished the installation and tested the Lamborghini Huracán radar detector installation, it was time to take the car back to the client. When we arrived in Kelowna, we unloaded the car and reviewed the installation with the client and showed him how to use the system. The client was very happy with the way we had integrated the system into the vehicle and plans on adding rear laser and radar receivers this summer.
