Certified Autosound and Security recently completed a trailer safety system installation for Porsche Center Langley. As part of our dealership services expansion, we have teamed with the Open Road Auto Group to offer safety, security and convenience products to their dealerships. Whether you are buying or leasing a new Porsche, Lamborghini, McLaren, Audi, BMW, Mazda, Toyota or Hyundai, we offer remote car starter, laser and radar detector solutions and much more, right at the dealership level. Let’s look at the Ford F-450 truck and trailer camera project we completed for the Open Road.
Open Road Auto Group Trailer Safety System
Open Road purchased a new 2017 Ford F-450 and a triple-axle, two-car enclosed trailer to take vehicles to events around the province. They contacted us to find out if it would be possible to install a backup camera on the rear of the trailer to make it safer and easier to maneuver when arriving at events. We sent Carter Bogaerts, the manager of our Chilliwack store, to the dealership to the inspect the vehicle so we could put together a proposal.
While researching options for the camera and monitor, we found an industrial-grade cable kit from a company called AIS. This coiled cable features OEM-quality connectors and provides connectivity for as many as four cameras. This gave us an idea. We put together two proposals for the Porsche dealership. The first included a heavy-duty camera and a display screen inside the truck. The second option added two additional cameras mounted inside the vehicle that would allow the driver to monitor the vehicles stored inside the trailer while driving. In the event of a sudden stop, these additional cameras will let the operator know whether their precious cargo is safe and secure. The Porsche Center chose the three-camera system.
Multi-Camera Safety System Installation
The installation project started with the task of running the camera cabling through the massive trailer. We used the concealed wiring channels along the roof of the trailer to ensure all the cabling would be safe and out of sight. The next step was to mount three AIS COMCAM1B commercial-grade cameras to the trailer. One camera is on the rear of the trailer above the fold-down rear door to provide a clear image of everything behind the vehicle when backing up. The second and third cameras are mounted inside the trailer. One is mounted at the rear of the trailer facing forward and the second is located at the front of the trailer facing backward. All three cameras include built-in infrared LEDs that will allow the operator to see even in complete darkness.
Truck Video Monitoring System
We mounted an AIS COM74VM 7-inch quad-input display on the dash of the F-450. The display is configured to show the two interior cameras in a vertical split-screen configuration while the truck is in normal operation. As soon as the transmission is put in reverse, the image switches automatically to a full-screen display of the rear outside camera.
The heavy-duty CTH74PRO camera cable and connectors are mounted inside the bed of the truck to make connecting the trailer wiring quick and simple. The cable is fully water-resistant, as are the connectors on the trailer and truck.
Dash Camera System
As the icing on the cake for this camera system, we installed a Thinkware F770 dashcam on the windshield of the F-450. This camera system faces forward and features a wide-angle lens to capture everything that happens in front of the truck while the ignition is on. Dash camera systems are an excellent solution to prevent fraud and false accusations in the event of an incident. The camera includes a GPS receiver that stores the vehicle speed and location along with the video information.
Tow Vehicle Camera Safety System
With the installation complete, the team from Porsche Center Langley returned to Certified Autosound and Security to pick up their truck and trailer. We reviewed the installation with the team and showed them how to use the trailer safety system.
