A client from Surrey recently contacted Certified Autosound and Security to inquire about installing a pontoon boat audio system. The client had been waiting for Sweetwater to deliver his 2286 WB boat for what seemed like an eternity. Shortly after the boat arrived, he dropped it off at our Abbotsford location and told our guys to create something that would look and sound amazing at any volume level. We provided the client with a few system design options and he decided to go with the whole enchilada in terms of a source unit, amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers upgrade.
Sweetwater Pontoon Boat Audio System
We started the project with the installation of a JL Audio MediaMaster MM100s-BE digital media receiver on the left side of the helm. The MM100s-BE includes Bluetooth for audio streaming and a USB port to play MP3, WMA and WAV audio files. A 3.5-inch TFT LCD screen makes it easy to see what song is playing or what station the radio is tuned to. We added a USB and auxiliary input extension to the left of the radio to make it easy to connect a smartphone for charging or music playback.
JL Audio Marine Audio Amplifiers and Speakers
The sound system on the boat features three JL Audio M-Series marine-grade amplifiers. Our installation technicians mounted an M600/1 monoblock, an M600/6 six-channel and an M700/5 five-channel amp in the storage area under the helm. We also added a second deep-cycle battery and an automatic battery isolator to the boat to extend the sound system playtime and ensure that the client would always have reserve power to start the engine and get home safely.
The monoblock amp provides 600 watts of power to a pair of 10-inch M10IB-5SG-TB subwoofers that are mounted in the front of the storage area on the port side of the boat. The subwoofer channel from the M500/5 amp powers a pair of 8-inch subwoofers that are mounted in the base of the helm facing the captain’s chair.
A set of JL Audio M770-CCX-SG-WH 7.7-inch coaxial speakers are mounted in the center of the boat on either side of the helm to ensure the captain can hear everything clearly. Two channels of the M700/5 power the M770-Series speakers.
Four pairs of JL MX650-CCX-SG-TB coaxial speakers are mounted in front of the seats throughout the boat to deliver effortless sound whether docked or at full throttle. The remaining pair of channels from the M700/5 and all six channels of the M600/6 amplifier power the eight speakers. In all, each speaker receives up to 75 watts of power at full volume. That’s 1,650 total watts of power available.
Marine LED Lighting Solution
The client wanted us to add some accent lighting to the boat for a little extra style. We used a Heise RGB LED lighting kit and mounted the light strips under the three bench seats and added an extra RGB LED light under the helm.
We also installed LED lighting along the side of the boat just above the pontoon to light up the water. The lighting system is controlled by an app on the client’s smartphone, which allows him to select the color of the lighting or create a variety of lighting patterns.
BC’s Marine Audio Experts
Cutting the speaker locations, running wiring, mounting the amps and installing the lighting with perfect alignment and detail proved to be very time-consuming. It took our installation team five full days to complete the installation of this Sweetwater pontoon boat audio system. That said, the results are magnificent. The client was absolutely shocked and thrilled with the sound of the audio system and how effortlessly it played at incredible volume levels. The smartphone-controlled lighting was truly the icing on the cake, and the client commented on how impressed he was that the light distribution was perfectly even and had no hot spots.
