A long-time Certified Autosound and Security client from Port Moody dropped by our Chilliwack store to inquire about a 2018 Porsche Macan radar detector solution. Knowing that police often unfairly target Porsche owners, he wanted a radar detector and laser defense system that would prevent him from being hassled. While talking with us about his goals for the system, the client made it clear that the radar detector installation needed to look as though it belonged in the vehicle and not appear as an afterthought or something that was “bolted on.” With the requirements for the system defined, we designed a protection solution around an Escort MAX Ci 360 system and a custom installation by our team of expert technicians.
Custom Laser Sensor Integration
We started the project by removing the front and rear bumpers from the little SUV and placing them on our workstands. When prepping body panels for paint, we use the same stands body shops use. We added soft carpet to the stands to keep them from damaging the bumpers.
Our team created a set of custom mounting brackets for the Escort Laser Shifters. We bonded each of the brackets to the top of the bumper intake using two-part 3M epoxy. After the epoxy cured, we mounted the sensors, leaving them slightly loose so we could aim them perfectly after they were back in the vehicle. Ensuring that the sensors are parallel to the ground and point directly forward and rearward is crucial to their operation.
Escort Twin Antenna Radar Detection Module
The MAX Ci 360 comes with dedicated front and rear radar receiver modules. Both receivers feature a dual-antenna design that optimizes the antennas’ mechanical sensitivity for each band. One horn handles X band signals while the other covers K and Ka band information. The front antenna module includes an on-board DSP processor to increase its sensitivity and ability to pick out police radar signals quickly.
We mounted the receivers to the factory impact bars attached to the chassis. The plastic bumper cover conceals the radar receivers and does not hinder their performance.
Porsche Macan Radar System Control
With the wiring for the sensors loomed securely and run into the interior, the next step was to create a mount for the detector hardware. We created a plastic bracket that fits under the dash and attaches to existing fastener locations. The laser interface and system control module mount to this bracket.
We integrated the control panel for the Escort system into the center console, just behind the cigarette lighter plug. We started by fabricating an acrylic plastic trim piece for the controller and bonding it to the tray that comes with the Porsche Smokers Package. It took some careful alignment, a little epoxy and some delicate sanding to make the trim piece look perfect. Once complete, we covered the panel using a process called flocking to give it a felt-like finish.
After consulting with the client, we chose to mount the display for the MAX Ci 360 in the overhead rearview mirror trim panel. We removed the passenger-side airbag warning and created a housing for the colour OLED display from the Escort system. Once the panel modifications were complete, we refinished it with SEM automotive texture coat. You can’t tell that it didn’t come from the factory this way.
Custom-Installed Radar Detector System
The client chose the Escort system based on its reputation for excellent radar sensitivity and compatibility with Dragoneye laser systems. He also liked that the system minimizes false alarms, thanks to the GPS receiver and IVT filter. The IVT filter ignores radar-based cruise control and lane departure signals from other vehicles. After almost three days of work on this Porsche Macan radar system, the vehicle was ready to go back to the client. He was impressed with our integration techniques.
