A client from Abbotsford recently contacted Certified Autosound and Security to inquire about upgrading his 2006 Subaru Outback with a new radio. In most of these projects, we remove the factory radio, then mount a solution like the Kenwood DDX-9906XR that this customer chose in its place. This project was a little different in that the client wanted us to create a custom switch panel in the upper part of the dash as well.
Subaru Outback Radio Upgrade

The goal for this project was to equip the Outback with a new radio that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration to make it easier and safer for the client to communicate with friends and co-workers while driving. Our team started the project by removing the large radio and its trim from the lower portion of the dash. We sourced a Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) trim panel that would allow us to mount the Kenwood radio without having to fabricate anything. The panel includes the option for a matching hazard light switch for an OEM look.
Custom Control Panel

The client asked us to build a panel for the upper portion of the dash to serve as a home for the dual USB ports from the radio, switch locations for several accessories already installed on the vehicle and a mounting bracket for an iPad. Our team built an aluminum support frame within the dash to handle the weight of the iPad and prevent it from moving as the car travels down the road.
We cut an acrylic plastic front panel for the four buttons and USB ports, and engraved the switch functions into the panel with the laser at our Maple Ridge shop. Four illuminated switches and a pair of PAC Audio USBDMA1 flush-mount USB extensions provide a clean and tidy look. Our team finished the project by reworking the trim panel around the radio and treating it to a new coat of paint.
Vancouver’s Automotive Enhancement Experts
After a couple of days’ work, we had this 2006 Subaru Outback radio upgrade complete. The client returned to the store to pick up the vehicle. He was thrilled with the work we performed! A member of our team helped him connect this phone to the radio and make the Bluetooth pairing. We finished by providing a run-through of all the radio features to ensure that the client would get the most from his purchase.
