The owner of this 2018 Toyota 4Runner recently dropped into Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford to talk about a stereo system upgrade. The client wanted something that would offer excellent detail and great bass output while playing much louder than the factory system. He also wanted us to treat the vehicle with sound deadening and add a dashcam and radar detector for extra protection.
Toyota 4Runner Stereo Upgrade

The sound system upgrade started with the installation of an Alpine iLX-F309 Halo 9 multimedia receiver with an iDatalink Maestro integration module. The F309 features a 9-inch touchscreen that hovers just in front of the dash. The Maestro interface allows the radio to talk to the vehicle computer to display information like engine and vehicle speed, fuel levels and much more. We also added a Rydeen backup camera and SiriusXM satellite radio tuner to the Alpine radio.
We connected the output of the Alpine to a Helix DSP.3 eight-channel digital signal processor. The processor will handle crossovers, signal delay and equalization for each speaker in the system. We used a Helix M SIX six-channel amp to drive the front component set and rear speakers and a matching M ONE monoblock amp to power the system’s subwoofers.
Blam Speaker Upgrade
After removing the interior trim panels, our team installed 17 sheets of SQL Soundmat damping material on the inner and outer door skins, the fenders and the floor to help make the truck even quieter. Next, the team created custom mounting brackets for a set of Blam S165 100 6.5-inch components in the doors and dash and a set of Blam Relax-Series 165RC 6.5-inch coaxial speakers in the back doors.
JL Audio Subwoofer System

Our team created a custom subwoofer enclosure in the rear corner of the vehicle for a single JL Audio 10TW3-D4 subwoofer. The enclosure features a custom grille that integrates with the factory trim panel. We removed the storage pockets and pressed mesh steel grilles to fit into the openings. The grilles are covered with gray cloth for a factory-installed appearance.
Radar Detector and Safety Camera System
In order to keep tabs on vehicles in front of and behind the 4Runner, we installed a Thinkware QA100 Elite dashcam system. The QA100 records at 2K resolution to capture license plates and other identification from the vehicles and objects around the 4Runner.
The client already had an Escort portable radar detector. We added a BlendMount bracket and Smart Cord to make the system easier to use and give it an integrated appearance.
