The owner of this 2019 Ram 3500 pickup truck recently contacted Certified Autosound and Security in Abbotsford to inquire about adding a subwoofer system. As you can see from the photos, the client wanted to add as much bass as possible to the truck while still maintaining its functionality and overall appearance. A member of our team inspected the vehicle and put together a solution that would maximize every square inch of the space behind the rear seats.
JL Audio W6-Series Subwoofers
The project started with the design and construction of a custom subwoofer enclosure that fits against the back wall of the truck. After taking a series of detailed measurements, we designed an enclosure that would house two JL Audio 10W6v3-D4 10-inch subs as well as a pair of 12W6v3-D4 drivers. Since the 12-inch subs are in the middle of the enclosure, we designed separate chambers for the outer drivers to ensure reliable operation.
We trimmed the enclosure in black vinyl with carpeted inserts. Our technicians added carpeted accent openings in the upper portion of the cabinet to add a little style and break up what would otherwise have been a large, blank, boring panel. We think it turned out pretty amazing.
VXi-Series DSP Amplifiers
The subwoofer system in this pickup truck features a pair of JL Audio VX1000/1i monoblock subwoofer amplifiers. Each amplifier is rated to produce a healthy 1,000 watts of power to each pair of subs. Our integration technicians created a set of plastic mounting platforms for the amplifiers so they could be mounted under the front seats and still allow the heater vents to feed the rear seat area.
The amplifiers are connected to the factory source unit using a PAC Audio AmpPro4 AP4-CH41 interface. The signal from the interface feeds into one of the amps where we used the integrated digital signal processor to filter and equalize the signal for both amplifier output stages. The beauty of this design is that we were able to mount a single DRC205 remote level control in the center console to manage the output to both sets of subwoofers from a single control.
