Remote Car Starters FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

December 1, 2013 By Driven

We have installed hundreds of Remote Car Starters for our clients, often they have the same questions and concerns about having a remote start system installed.  There is no doubt that having a remote starter to fend off the cold, damp winters we get in Abbotsford and around BC’s Fraser Valley. Having a remote car starter in Canada is as Canadian as Maple Syrup! 🙂 So let’s go over some of the most common remote car starter questions and remote starter installation questions, and clear up some myths and misunderstandings about them. You can also call us at 604-746-3110 with any questions or concerns you have.

Will having a remote car starter installed void a vehicle’s warranty?

In brief – NO.   This is probably the biggest remote car starter question clients have, and the one with the most misunderstanding and misinformation around it. The simple answer is that having a Remote Car Starter will not void your warranty. The Magnuson Act Laws are in place to allow you to have devices like remote starters installed in your vehicle. You should ensure that the quality of equipment you choose, and the quality of installation is such that warranty concerns do not come into play.  The best method is to select a reputable remote start system manufacturer and have it installed by a professional authorized dealer for that product. They have been trained to work with those systems and a quality manufacturer will support both your and the installing dealer (us) in the event there are any concerns or obstacles to overcome.  In fact many dealers will use the same products and often have a specialist like ourselves install remote starters in vehicles at the time of purchase when they were not factory installed in the vehicle!

What is a “Interface Module” or “Bypass”? Why do I need it?

Most newer vehicles have a factory anti-theft system (not to be confused with a proper security system) in them. Some times these are referred to as “Chip Keys” or transponder keys.  In order for a remote starter to start the car, an Interface Module or “By-Pass” is used so that when the Remote Start is activated the system will allow the vehicle to start. The important part is to ensure that the device used does not totally disable your vehicles anti-theft system!  Interface Modules are also increasingly required to work with newer vehicles computers and start sequences, beyond the basic Power and Start wiring that was needed 30 years ago when we started doing remote car starters!

My friend says he can install my Remote Starter, or he has done them 10 years ago.

Vehicle electronics systems and wiring have become a lot more complex in the last few years. Installing a remote starter today involves programming modules to the specific software and features of your vehicle, and wiring them into various systems in your vehicle. Our clients have found that when trusting their vehicle to someone, choosing a trained, experienced technician who is up to date on vehicle systems, installation methods, has full access to factory level vehicle wiring information as well as direct access to the manufacturers for any technical support is best. Why would you want to trust the 2nd most expensive purchase most of us make – our vehicles – to anyone else.  The added benefit of choosing a facility like ours is that should your remote start system not work, you simply return to us and have it fixed, no waiting for your friend (or his friend) to have time to check it out.  Our friend Mitch Schaffer (who wrote a book on remote car starters!) has an informative write up on this on his website MobileSolutionsOnline.com .

Can you install a Remote Starter in a car with a Manual Transmission?

Yes, our Manual Transmission Remote Car Starter systems have been specially designed to work in vehicles with Manual Transmissions or “Stick Shifts”.

Can you install a Remote Starter in a car with PTS or Push To Start Button?

Yes, our Remote Car Starter systems work with vehicles that have Push-To-Start or PTS buttons.

Can you install a Remote Starter in a diesel trucks or cars?

Yes, our Remote Car Starter systems have specially designed circuits to allow for your glow plugs to warm before starting, and even have Turbo Cool Down modes to allow you to exit the vehicle and leave the engine running while your Turbo cools down.

Can somebody steal my car while it is running with the Remote Starter?

No, while the remote start system is running your steering wheel lock, transmission lock and key transponder system (if equipped) all remain active. If a valid key is not inserted into your vehicles ignition and turned to on or run position, the remote start system will shut the engine down as soon as the brake pedal is touched.  Your vehicle will also remain locked while it is remote started (provided you locked it when you exited the vehicle).

How long does it take to have a Remote Car Starer installed?

Typically we ask that you drop your vehicle off for half a day (4 hours) to have a remote start system installed. Some vehicles require less time, some require more.

What should I bring with me on the day my Remote Starter is being installed?

We ask that you bring all of the keys you have for your vehicle, and any remotes you have for the vehicle. Many Interface Modules for newer cars require both keys at the time of installation for programming. Other than that, just bring your excitement – no more cold car mornings!

I have a remote starter I bought elsewhere or received as a gift, will you install it?

Due to the complex nature of remote start systems, and the complexity of diagnosing any issues that may arise and providing warranty, we do not install systems that are not purchased from us. This is to ensure that we can fully support and warranty both the work we perform on your vehicle and the system itself.

Can I have a Remote Car Stater installed if I have a factory Car Alarm or Security System?

Yes, our remote starter systems and Interface Modules can be integrated to work with factory installed security systems or car alarms.

My vehicle came with a Factory Remote Starter, but the range is poor, can you extend it?

Often, yes we can install a Range Extended remote giving you longer range to start your vehicle with. Contact us to find out if your vehicle can have a Range Extender installed.

We are here to help you select the right type of remote car starter for your vehicle, and address any questions or concerns you have. Please come visit our facility in Abbotsford at 2139 Clearbrook Road, or call us at 604-746-3110.

We would have to diagnose the problem at one of our shops to be able to accurately answer that but if you are having an issue i strongly suggest taking it back to where it was done to have a look.

The short answer is no not really or easily. The remote starter needs to see the key in the ignition and turned to the run position before the brake is applied (which you need to do to put it in gear). If anyone presses the brake before the key is in and on, the remote starter and engine turn off.

Cornelius, if you are able to lock the system with the Comnmand Start remote, but then not able to lock or remote start the vehicle, I would suspect there is a fault with the remote or the system. I will message you directly to find out where you are located and if there is someone near you who can help diagnose what is going on and hopefully get it back working for you.

My used Toyota Corolla ’06 came with an after-market remote starter and no manual for it. I could not figure out how to use it until years later. Apparently I have to leave the spare key in the ignition to be able to start it remotely with the button on the remote. But the key had to be left in the intermediate position, not the off position. So if I had forgotten to turn the radio off while exiting the vehicle, my car battery would die and I’d have to jump my car to start it back up. Is this normal? Or is there another way to make the remote starter work?

      November 25, 2015 at 10:37 am

No that is not normal. It sounds like it was either not installed correctly, or something has failed. You should NEVER leave a key in the ignition.

It looks like you are not in our local area, if you are please come see us to have it checked out, if not please take your vehicle to a local car audio specialist who does remote starters and have them check it out.

I purchased a used vehicle that came with a remote started installed but the owner previous to the person I bought it from had lost the remote. I contacted the company and it’s $80 or so after shipping to purchase a new remote. Is it possible to use a different brand remote so long as it is also a 1 way AM remote or will it have to be brand specific?

Remotes are specific to manufactures, so you do need to match those. That said check with your local car audio specialist (or us if your from the Abbotsford area) – they can verify what options will work for you, and can often get you better pricing that the manufacturers may offer. Most shops will also program the remotes for free when you purchase the remote from them. 🙂

      December 18, 2015 at 11:07 am

Hi Emily, Some brands of remotes starter (or to be more specific the interface or “bypass” module) used will require 2 Factory keys be present when installing and programming the remote starter on a 2005 Ford Taurus. These must be two original keys, not something from a locksmith as they typically copy the code from 1 key when making a duplicate key – so you have 2 keys, but to the car they are the same. The good news is we do have some systems that we can program with only 1 factory key present – which means no troubles for you. Come by the store at 2139 Clearbrook Rd in Abbotsford and we can help you pick out a remote starter that best suits your needs and give you a firm, no cost, no obligation quote on it.

Hi Matt, Yes we can install a remote starter on a vehicle with Manual locks and windows. The only exception would be if it was a manual transmission, if it’s manual transmission you would need to install power door locks (which can be done).

Hi Kendall, Remote starters have a low draw on the vehicles battery. Provided your vehicle is used on a normal basis there won’t be any battery concerns. A second battery is not needed to operate a remote starter. Come by the store and we can review the systems with you and your use.

At this point it’s probably best to take it in to a qualified installer (or come by our shop if your local). My first guess would be an issue in the remote itself if you are still receiving RS confirmation on the remote and the timer is showing up but just not starting.

Hi Moe, you should take the vehicle back to where the installation was done. Without hearing the exact noise, if it’s just a quiet clicking it could be a module or starter brain issue. If it’s a louder noise from the engine it could be trying to crank the engine over and not fully starting it. I would not keep trying to use it and take it to the original installer, or to a facility in your area that has good experience with remote starters. If your in the Abbotsford area you are welcome to stop by our facility at 2139 Clearbrook Rd, Abbotsford and will can check over your remote stater in your 2007 Dodge Caliber.

      March 14, 2016 at 12:12 pm

Hi David, it is possible on some vehicles to start and stop an aftermarket remote car starter from the original factory remote control. One downside is that you are limited to the range of the factory remote to start and stop the vehicle. Often many people will combine this with a system like Drone or Smartstart where you can use your cell phone as a 2 way remote with virtually unlimited range. Or add a small 1 button remote that can have range up to 2500 feet. So there are lots of solutions depending on your needs. Please feel free to come by the store with your vehicle and we can show you the options for it and your application.

Hi Lucia, I would take it back to whomever you purchased it from (Nissan dealer or installer) and get them to check it over. Usually the status LED for a remote start system will not come on while running off the key. Each brand operates differently, so I can’t say for sure why or what it could mean. That said your system should still be under warranty.

That is not a model number I recognize. So two things you can do:

            1. In the owners manual look for section called valet. Follow the procedure listed to take your system out of valet mode. Many remote starter systems are programmed to not work after loosing power. This is a safety feature so that a mechanic does have an accidental starting while working on a vehicle. As well it lets the user re-activate it and test it once the work is done, and in a safe setting. Once your system is out of valet mode, try the remote starter, it should now remote start the vehicle, or at least try to.

            2. If you like email us a picture of your remote and of the cover of the owners manual, or page that has the model # etc on it. I will see if that helps me ID the system.

Otherwise I would recommend coming by with it (if your in our area). If you are not, find a reputable car audio specialist in your area an visit them with it. They hopefully can help out.

Hi Roger, Remote Starters are not hard on an electrical system, if they were they certainly wouldn’t come installed from the factory, no would the car dealerships offer them as an add on at the time of sale. The most important aspect of a remote starter system is proper installation (and support after the install should you run into an issue). Many installers will try to use crimp connectors or “Scotch Locks” to speed up their install time (or not have to learn how to solder properly). These often fail early, or create a poor contact that can lead to resistance issues. My advice if your not in our area is to research some quality car audio and security stores in your area, read the reviews about them online. Visit their facility, ask for a tour, as them how they install a remote starter. Do not go for the lowest price (you also don’t need to spend a fortune, just remember nothing in life is free, and if a price sounds too good to be true it often is). Hi Dave,

The answer to that is – it depends. Most brains have a specific wiring harness, and if it’s older it’s likely changed over the years, even if your looking at the same brand. Newer systems have a lot more outputs and options on them for working with different vehicles and systems that older systems would not have had wires for. In that case we recommend removing the entire system (unless it’s the same installer doing the swap) so that your new system can be fully warrantied for parts and all the connections by your new installer. We don’t recommend trying to “re-use” some of the old wiring as there is no way to tell for sure the quality of the connection etc without taking it all apart and checking it and at that point, we might as well just do it again and know it’s right!
If your main objective is to upgrade your remotes, that can sometimes be easier – depending on the brand and age of the system. More and more manufacturers are building their systems where the antenna and remotes are like a module that plugs into the brain. That means that for those systems that can do it, we can program a new antenna and remotes to your existing brain – giving you more range, easier access to advanced features etc.
So the best thing to do is come see us, or visit a Remote Starter specialist in your area and review your system and what you want to do, in order to determine the best course of action.

That is a bit of a loaded question as there are so many different vehicles, options on each vehicle like type of transmission, level of factory security to integrate with, complexity of wiring etc. So there is no one size fits all answer to your question. That said with a quick visit to our shop (or your local remote starter specialist if your not near us), can get you a detailed, accurate quote for your vehicle, and more importantly the system and remotes etc you want.

I want to remove a remote starter that is in my 2003 corolla I bought, I dont need it and it runs down my battery when I parked it all winter. Is it easy to uninstall, or can i just cut the wires and throw away the device that sits in the window and blinks all the time.
It was installed by some original owner in quebec i think.

You have a couple options there. You could remove it (I recommend having that done by a professional so that they can ensure no wires are broken or compromised to the point they may break etc down the road after removal, especially if the install was done using t-taps etc). Or if you want to leave it in, in case you want to use it later etc, you could just remove the fuses from the unit (and bypass if present) – no fuse, no power, no drain.

Thanks Tony, in the end it turned out to be easy, the device in the window could be unplugged – the wires just plug into the socket, so now I just put away the device and can use it in some future time, and no power drain now,

    Hello
I bought a used 2005 Explorer with an aftermarket remote starter and after pressing numerous button combinations was able to get the SUV started twice but not again ??
The FOB has no markings to see the brand/model and I crawled under the dash on the drivers side to see if I could locate the control box but no luck ?
I understand this is a loaded question but any help on typical starting procedure would be helpful.

I’m not familiar with that model number of system. That said the installing dealer should be able to re-program it for you easily. Usually a system will not loose full programming with a battery disconnect, so it might be worth getting it checked out. However often they will go into a valet mode which won’t allow the system to remote start. It’s fairly easy on most remote start systems (and something the end user can do) to turn the valet mode off. Typically it involves a couple buttons on the remote, or turning the ignition on and pressing the valet button. Again that is something the installing dealer can and should teach you how to do it that is the case. If your in our area drop by and we can go over it with you, if not a good quality car audio store in your area should be able to help you out.

My car keys and compustar alarm/remote start fob were stolen by someone who knows where my car is located. The ignition and door locks have been re-keyed and I have temporarily removed my remote start/alarm antenna so the fobs won’t be able to talk to the system. Is it possible to make the system forget both fobs that are programmed to it and then reprogram my current fob and a new one? Or am I stuck with junking the system and buying/having a new one installed?

      Hi Jarrett,

Yes you can “erase” the stolen remotes from the Compustar system.

First off, please come see us if your in the Abbotsford area and we will do this for you if you like, or if your not you should be able to visit any Compustar dealer and they can assist you – it’s not hard to do, but you want to make sure it’s done right.

Seeing as you have one “old” remote that still works with the system I would do it this way so you can test it to ensure the old remotes are out of the system:

      1. Insert your vehicle key into the ignition and cycle the key to the ‘ON’ position and back to the ‘OFF’ position a total of (5) five times rapidly, ending in ‘OFF’ position (The engine will not need to be started at any time during this process.)
      – Do this within 7 seconds, if you take longer than 7 seconds to cycle the ignition it likely won’t enter programming mode.
      – The parking lights will flash (or you will hear a faint clicking sound) (# of times will vary, but usually once on newer systems).

      2. Immediately following the key cycle on the NEW REMOTE, press and release LOCK Button on the remote (Sometimes labeled as Button #1 (I). Please note: extending the press longer than .5 second will prevent the system from recognizing the remote.
      – The lights should flash (or you may hear a faint click, or siren chirp) to confirm the system learned the remote.

      3. Now using the same remote, press the Lock button 3 more times, waiting for the confirmation each time before pressing it again. You will now have taught the new remote to the system a total of 4 times. This will fill all the remote memory positions in the brain with the new remote.

      4. Turn the ignition on and then back off.

      5. Try locking the doors using the new remote – it should work.

      6. Now try your old remote – it should no longer work – if it does than go back and repeat the learning process again making sure to learn the new remote 4 times.

      7. If your old remote doesn’t work you should be safe at that point. Now enter programming again and learn your old remote you have back in to the system (I usually also hit lock on any other remotes again – out of habit, to ensure they stay in the system) 🙂 , then turn ignition back on and off, and then test both the new and old remotes. They should both work.

The only other way to do it would be to do a full reset on the brain, and then you would need to reprogram the system to the vehicle – which you should see a dealer to do.

      Notes:
      – All doors must be shut during programming. In addition, the system must be disarmed.
      – Valet mode will be activated if the system does not identify a remote during programming.
      – The process will be different for Push-To-Start vehicles. (probably easier to visit a dealer at this point if you have a PTS vehicle).

If any of this doesn’t work, go see a Compustar dealer for assistance.

    Hi Tony,
I have an ‘autostart’ remote starter on my 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander. When I start the vehicle it starts fine but then after about 30 seconds my car alarm goes off and won’t stop until I get the fob close to the vehicle. I have tried not arming the alarm when I leave the car (planning to remote start it the next morning) but the alarm still goes off. It is still running while the alarm is beeping but I’m sure the neighbors aren’t happy. What am I doing wrong? Should I be leaving a fob in the car? That doesn’t seem safe…

There is most likely something either in-correct in the programming of your remote start, or the interface module to work with the factory security and anti-theft system. Or something has died, or a wire connection has broken/come loose.

Do NOT leave your fob in your car!!

Do you know who installed the system originally – if so best to take it back to them. If your in our area please come by the shop with your vehicle. Either way you should get the system checked out by a professional – it’s most likely not a simple press a button fix.

      Hi Jeff,

That will depend a bit on how Toyota handles their security protocol when adding new factory remotes to the factory keyless entry system. Are you just adding remotes, or buying a new one to replace a lost one? If it’s adding than most likely it would not affect things. If you are replacing an lost one (where you would want’ that remote code removed from the factory system so it no longer worked) then there is a good chance that might cause the remote starter to stop working. If so it’s usually not too difficult for a qualified remote starter expert to re-learn the remote start system back to the vehicle – it’s mostly a programming thing, but is usually a bit involved, so would be best to get a professional to do it. That said, I’d get the Toyota guys to do their work, and then see if the starter works afterwards.

I had a remote start installed on my 2011 Kia Soul, manual transmission. Everything works great, except that when the car is opened and locked again after leaving it “set” earlier, then you can’t remote start it later. I’d have to actually start it up and leave it “set” for later remote start. Is there a way to fix this by pressing the remote buttons?

      October 26, 2016 at 10:52 am

      Hi Nancy,

That is the way it should work. When you unlock the car there is the potential for someone to have entered the vehicle and released the e-brake, or knocked the shifter into gear etc in a manual transmission vehicle. So at that point the remote starter doesn’t know for sure that it is safe to start the vehicle. So as a safety the systems should not start if the vehicle has locked. It’s for everyones protection, and is the right way to do things. So if you unlock the vehicle to grab something, just remember to jump in and start it, then do the exit procedure and re-lock and you will be good to remote start it again.

Hi Dan, Most people like to have a longer range remote for their systems and will have a small 1 button remote attached to the factory fob. Some vehicles do not need it, we can test yours here if you come by with the vehicle and both remotes. You can also use a cellular interface like a Compustar Drone in place of the remote, provided you don’t often park in an area without cellular coverage. The reason for the need of the second remote (other than extended range) is that some vehicles lock out the factory remotes once the vehicle is running.

Hi Chris, that is not uncommon on PTS vehicles for the remote starter to either shut down when the vehicle is 1) Unlocked or 2) door is opened or 3) the PTS button is pressed. It is often part of the vehicles operation from the factory to ensure that you have a valid fob with you before driving away. You simply need to press the PTS button again so the vehicle can check that you have a fob with you, and restart. Otherwise someone could just jump in an drive away! So the 2 seconds of starting the vehicle again is well worth it from a vehicle safety perspective, and your still getting in a nice warm (or cool in the summer) vehicle 🙂

Hi Chris, I can’t think of a reason for that, it’s no different that turning a car off and then turning it back on. As well it’s not something you would likely be doing dozens of times a day. One habit to get into if you wanted to do so would be to press the brake as soon as you get in, which would shut the system down. Then put your seatbelt on, plug your phone in etc and then start the vehicle back up again. This would give things a bit of a delay if you want.

      Hi Samuel,

It will depend on the remote starter you have and remotes you have. Pretty much all modern remote starters have the ability to control door locks, but your installer would have to have hooked them up (or programmed and wired an interface for them if they are computer controlled). The best thing to do would be to stop by our shop with your vehicle and remotes and we can go over it to see what you need to have done. If your not in our area, visit a well reviewed, quality car audio specialist in your area.

Yes – for remote starters, valet mode just disables the remote start feature. You can still start the vehicle with the key (or PTS push to start button). You can also still lock and unlock the vehicle with the remote (if your system has that feature).

Provided they are the same make and model, then yes you can get your spare remote reprogrammed to his vehicle (remember to remove it from the pairing on your car, or it will likely start both vehicles). Provided the system was installed correctly with any needed programming buttons cost show be very low. Hi Emily,

Good question! We actually ran into this a few years ago when some vehicles started coming with OEM Remote starters. The reality is that unless you or the shop specifically check the vehicles remote, or check the vehicles invoice for a remote start system, it is very possible that just as you did not notice you had a remote starter, the shop you visited would not either. After all, the owner of the vehicle came asking for one, the first thing that is not going to pop into most peoples mind is that you might already have one! 🙂 Remember that the vast majority of people, and especially people who have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars starting and building a business are honest people – otherwise they don’t tend to get a good reputation or stay in business very long. So if your car did have a OEM remote starter and they installed another one – it was most likely not intentional at all.

Now a few notes to that:
      1. Just because you can now start your vehicle with the factory remote, does not mean that you had a factory remote starter before. A lot of newer aftermarket systems can be programmed so that when you press the lock key 3 times, it will remote start.
Usually most OEM remote starters will use a combination of presses on two buttons to remote start. So if it’s just 3 x Lock button to remote start, it is likely an additional feature of your new aftermarket remote starter system you had installed. Bonus
      2. Even if you did have a factory remote starter, most people don’t like the short range of the remotes. Your new system likely has much longer range and possibly other features that are better than factory.
      3. If you want to know for sure if you had a remote starter before you can get the installer to put your aftermarket system into Valet mode, or disconnect it from power. Then try the factory remote again to see if it still works.

In the end, it was most likely not intentional at all. If you didn’t know you had a remote starter already, there is not really a reason for them to look, and even more difficult if it was sold and booked over the phone etc.

      Hope that answers your question.

The best thing to do is get the model number off the brain itself. Once that is known then it’s a matter of checking the features and install options that were done to make sure it was hooked up to use those features and ordering the matching remotes. I’m not super familiar with that system, but these would be the 3 likely causes:

      1. Bad Antenna – received but does not send
      2. Broken wire on antenna cable
      3. Incorrect remote for 2 way section of system – but 1 way still works.

First step would be to confirm that you do have the correct remote. Then I’d test continuity on each wire from end to end of the antenna cable, if that checks out then it would be get a new antenna to test.

If your in the Abbotsford area, your welcome to come by and we can check it out. Otherwise I would visit a dealer that works with that brand, or at least is a good quality remote start dealer.

Remote Starters are programmed to shut down after a set period of time if you don’t enter the vehicle and take over from the remote starter. This is to prevent excess ideling and of course running out of gas.

The default runtime on the CS800S is 15 minutes, it can be programmed by the installer for other durations. Most people will keep it at 15 minutes though. You can verify it by checking with your installer, or by simply starting it and a timer at the same time and watching for it to shut down. (As a note the standard time for most aftermarket remote starters to run is 12-15 minutes – most can be adjusted to other run times).

NOTE: the remote starter has no way of knowing the fuel level of your vehicle, so if you remote start it when you are low on gas, it could run out of gas! We recommend never leaving your car with less than a quarter tank of fuel during remote starter season. It is also good from a safety perspective too incase you get stuck somewhere when it’s cold, you have some fuel to keep warm with!

Hi! I had a new compustar remote car starter installed yesterday as my old one quit working. They were able to use the old bypass system saving me money. I went to start my car this morning and used the fob that came with my old starter. My car started with no problem. Why would my old fob work with a new starter? Does that make sense? I’m wondering if they just repaired my old starter and gave me newly programmed fobs but charged me for a new starter. Thanks in advance!

    Hello
Recently had a remote start co (Mickey Shore) install their viper remote in a 2000 Ford Taurus and I notced the door chime going off when the drivers door is open (No key in ign. ot head light left on). Also– after I “arm” the system approx. 30 minutes later the alarm goes off and no one is around it. PLUS I even disc. the “sensitivity sensor” small clear plastic box (approx 1 in x 2 in. size). The dome light is shutting off (approx. 20 sec.) after the doors are closed… tested each door individually too. I did run the car through a car wash, which is when I noticed the 30 minute alarm issue happening. —- Hood pin? Door pin? Dome light? Wiring? I had the alarmed installed in Michigan but now in Colorado

When I used the remote start for the first time this morning I noticed the time said 7:17am so I knew I had 10 minutes before it automatically shut off. However, I got into my vehicle around 7:30 am so it had already auto shut off. I go to start up my engine and when the car powered on my clock on the dash said it was 7:17 am …. does your remote starter ever freeze your time?…I’ll see if it does that tonight when I start it up before leaving work, but I wanted to know if it’s just me or if you’ve experienced that before

I bought a used 2009 saturn vue 3 weeks ago. Almost 2 days of having it, we’d drive it, park, turn off ignition, and then the car would die and not turn on again, stereo locked down. Had it serviced, pcm fried. Replaced it, 2 days later same thing with dying issue. Took it to another guy who found a sticker under the hood that an aftermarket remote start was installed. We were not made aware of this, no fobs were given, only ignition keys. It happened again. Could these problems be caused by the unknown remote start that was installed by previous owner without us having the fob for it or faulty wiring?

The two way remote works fine, but the Nustart wouldn’t even make the car blinkers come on. Lock/unlock doesn’t work, it doesn’t start the vehicle. When I picked up my car, the tech demonstrated the remote start function hitting the factory keyfob lock button 3 times and it started. So my next question was could someone drive off with my car without the smart key fob. He replied yes, because the system does not support that function, not does it support the function of remote shut off, either. Is this tech bullshitting me? He did mention that i could remotely shut off the engine from within the viper app only.

      Hi Karen,
Without knowing the make and model of the remote car starter, it is tough to say what the button combination is. The most common activation methods for remote starters are either pressing the start button once, or pressing and holding it for 2 seconds. If by chance you are able to send in a picture of the remote, we may be able to better narrow that process down.

      Hi Trina,
This is honestly a pretty common complaint on some factory remote starter systems. You are in luck however! An aftermarket remote starter can be installed in this vehicle that will allow for secure takeover. This means that once the door is open, the vehicle will stay running. You will have 45 seconds to engage the procedure which is as simple as putting your foot on the brake, and putting the vehicle in drive. Hi Chris,
Although uncommon, it is possible that there is something staying awake in the vehicle causing the draw. The best practice is to have a draw test done on the truck with the remote starter installed as well as disconnected. This will give you a definite answer on if the remote starter is causing the issue.

With the OEM Remote start, you would have to contact the dealer to see if that can be programmed. If you’d like to have more control and longer run times, you can also have an aftermarket remote starter installed that you will have much more control over. You will also increase the range capabilities by using a long range remote.

This problem is honestly a bit hard to diagnose without seeing the vehicle. It could be a number of different things causing that issue. Do you have a local authorized dealer to take it to and have them check it out? Also, there could be a possibility that the ignition switch is self is causing some of these problems if it is faulty.

Generally the best practice to see if there is a remote starter in the vehicle is to remove the under dash and see if there is a remote starter hidden somewhere in there. My wife bought a brand new 2018 Nissan Rogue with the factory installed one-way remote starter. The range on the FOB is only 60m, nowhere near the distance she requires to remote start the vehicle. Nissan’s only solution is to use their Connect app to remote start the vehicle, but at a cost of $35 per month for as long as she owns the vehicle (so if she owns the vehicle for 10 years she will have to pay $4200). Is there any way to:
    1) Extend the range of the remote (up to 1km perhaps)?
    2) Make it a two-way remote so that she can confirm the car has started?

      Hey JP,

At this current time there arnt any options within the after market world to do this, without installing an aftermarket remote start system with a secondary fob. unless the factory offers a 2 way remote for your system.

I have a 2016 Santa Fe with factory installed remote start. The key fob doesn’t start the car because Hyundai wants you to use their Blue Link service. I’m not paying $150 a year to start my car from my phone using an app that is sub par at best. However I don’t want to install a second remote start. So, my question is can my key fob or an aftermarket remote start key fob be program to operate the existing remote start system or do I have to have to have a new system installed?

At this time there is no such thing without going to something like the DRONE setup, which is through an app.
There are some other options out there, Stop in at one of our locations and we can go through them with you!

I tried to put my truck in gear while autostart was running and forgot to put key in. Now the transmission won’t go into a gear even when starting with the key. What could this be?

      Hi Vikki,
If is often best to have the truck in and for us to check what brand and model the remote starter is by checking at the module under the dash.
      I hope this helps!

now i know on a GM factory remote on the key fob..after remote starting 3 times without driving the car…on the 4th time it will not start,,cus you have to cycle the ignition and it resets its self…is that the same method on the chrysler..??????

      Hi Gerry,
Depending on the unit brain installed in the vehicle, the 3, then 5 flashes generally mean that the unit is sensing footbrake. We would suggest taking that in to a compustar dealer and having the brain reflashed to that vehicle. It is likely a firmware issue.
      Hope that helps!

I took car to install remote start for my 2013 Honda CR-V ,

After 6-7 hours in the dealership I got a call saying that my hatch sensor is at fault and that they can’t install before replacing the sensor, after some exchanged words I told them that they received the car in perfect condition and that I didn’t have any issues or faulty sensors prior – they proceeded with installing the remote start and told me that the remote will work intermittently- I was not happy with their decision and ended up agreeing for them to replace sensor and will end up paying 1300$

My main question is is it possible that their mechanic messed up the sensor because he was bypassing it to start and then found out that that is the problem?!

    Thank you

      Hi S.R.,

That is a very hard thing to determine without actually seeing the vehicle and how the remote starter was integrated. When referring to a hatch sensor, do you in fact mean the hood pin switch?

I had a remote car starter installed to my vehicle (2008 saturn vue) about a week ago and ever since, it will start but the radio and my blinkers dont work. Do you know why this would be? Did they do something wrong? ☹
It is a used vehicle I bought a couple years ago, it already had an aftermarket remote start but the remote broke. I imagine they wouldnt have had to do too much new wiring for the new one (charged me $250) what could they have done wrong to my car? I’m worried it’s going to get worse and blow the alternator or something lol..

Hi Becky, that is a bit of a weird one. I would definitely have the installer who put the remote start in look over the install and see if something was possibly left disconnected or if something was improperly installed. Unfortunately, it is near impossible for us to diagnose this without seeing the vehicle.
      I hope that helps!

    Hi,
I had a Compustar remote car starter install in a 2014 Hynudia Tuscon. Would that cause the BlueLink cellular remote starter to stop working? Other BlueLink features like locking/unlocking doors, horn and lights work, but not the remote start. The OEM Hynudia key fob never had a remote start button on it so it was one reason I had the Compustar system installed. On top of not being sure if I wanted to pay $179/yr for BlueLink.

      Hi Pete,

It is honestly tough to say. It is likely that this is the case, but we would need to confirm this with compustar and datalink once we knew exactly which compustar unit is installed.

Could you find out the model of the module installed?

To the best of our knowledge without in fact seeing the installation in that vehicle, it should not interfere with the blue link system.

      Good morning Lacey,

I would definitely mention this to the installer of the remote start unit and see if they can diagnose it. Some vehicles require an “unlock before start, relock after start” procedure to be programmed in to defeat the OEM alarm when remote starting. Any reputable brand of remote starter will have this feature available for programming.

Liliana It all depends on what kind of system is installed in the vehicle. Most of the systems will have a “valet” or emergency over ride solution, alternatively you could just have a technician remove the system potentially and restore functionality. this would be something that would have to be done in store however.

Daniel in a 2011 Fusion there typically would not be an extra key in the installation (this does of course depend on who did the install and what product was used) In Ford’s we havn’t had to use a key in the install from around the early 2000’s. everything is done via the remote starter brain (again depending on the module) Thank you for the question and have a great day!

I had a compustar remote system installed in my 2016 CRV when new. Since the car isn’t driven much the battery drains after about 4 days of inactivity. I seldom use the remote start, so for the warmer season coming up, I removed the 3 fuses that come from the control module which is labeled CM7200 to disable. All seemed fine except when driving with the 3 fuses removed, two 30 amp and one 10 amp, the door locks cycle when driving at different speeds. Replacing the fuses and it was back to normal. Will entering valet mode help with the draw or is there anything else I can do short of having it uninstalled?

      April 14, 2020 at 10:43 am

Good Morning Vincent, there may be a couple things that could be done to help with the draw. newer vehicles have so much technology built into them that 4-7 days isnt abnormal for even just a stock vehicle in some cases. A couple of things to have checked: Battery life, Being that the car is rarely driven it would be a good idea to take your vehicle into a service facility and have the battery checked. This is especially important if the battery is the original from 2016.

I would suggest having some form of trickle charging battery charger installed in the vehicle if this is going to be regular operation, that way you don’t damage the battery or have any other issues. If of course this isnt an acceptable option then yes ultimately removal may be the case.

Thank you for the question, and if we can do anything else to assist please let us know.

Good morning. You will need to get new keys for the car. A remote start system will not allow you to take over and drive without the key. Your vehicle also has a steering lock device for when the key is not in the ignition. The Honda dealership should be able to order you a cut key based off the vin number of your car.

I have a compustar 2wg15r-PM. The post to start starts it and then dies. The code says it’s a 4. Which is good pin. But I looked all over the front of the engine and I can’t find one or any loose wires. Is there something else or did they bypass it. I live in Oklahoma city, Oklahoma. Got it at Best Buy. Had geek squad hook it up. Took it back and they said geek squad isn’t there anymore. What do I do?

When you do find out it would be wonderful to know what the issue was so we can keep track of it in case it ever happens to us.

Good Morning Chris, in most cases remotes can be sourced without installing a whole new system, It all depends on the brand of remote starter you have and how backwards compatible their systems are or how their legacy (old product support is)

Thank you for providing this forum! I had a locksmith visit our home to program a spare ignition key. We had lost our spare key chainand did not want to risk losing the other and have no way to start our car. The spare key chain included an ignition key and a fob for the vehicle’s autostart feature.

The technician arrived and programed the ignition key and it worked fine. The very next morning, like every other morning, my wife went to start the car using the autostart fob. It didn’t work. Coincidently we found the spare key chain (in my brief case 🙂 and that autostart fob didn’t work either.

Could the reprograming the ignition key disable the programed autostart feature?
    Thanks

Had remote starter system installed in our mini-van. Initially we had the car alarm go off randomly. The tech said the alarm system was being disabled intermittently so he reprogammed the system.

Now the doors unlock for about 10-15 sec during the remote start process, approximately, 5 – 7 sec of this time is with the engine running.

Is this normal? Seems like a potential security risk that someone can gain access to the unlocked vehicle.

Tom Sorry for the delay, it sounds like the factory alarm was causing a conflict with the remote starter, 10-15 seconds is extreme but in some cases yes we do have to disable the OEM alarm by disarming the system allowing the remote start to perform its function and then re-enable the system (it’s called disarm before start) Even if the vehicle was disarmed and they timed it just right to get into the vehicle they would not be able to steal the vehicle as as soon as you put your foot on the brake it will shut off (without the key present) Although not ideal without knowing what hardware, what vehicle and how it was installed this may have been the only solution. I hope this helps and sorry again for the delay

      Justin
