A new client from Abbotsford came to Driven Audio looking to upgrade the sound system in his 2012 Toyota Tundra. One of our team members sat down with him and got to know him better. We then went out to his truck and listened while he explained his likes and dislikes about the vehicle. Driven Audio tries to do this with every client so we can be sure we provide a solution that best fits their unique needs.
The Not So Premium Sounding Factory System Had To Go
Right away, we noticed that this truck had the JBL premium audio system, but it sounded anything but premium. While it had decent output, it lacked any real clarity, and the bass was subpar at best. After spending time with the Tundra owner, we recognized that a great-sounding car stereo system was in order and that he also wanted the ability to easily use his iPhone while driving. We presented our suggested solution to the client, and he liked our proposal, so we set an installation date.
Radio Upgrade Puts The Client In Command Of His Smartphone Handsfree
The plan was to completely change the audio system in this Tundra, rather than integrate with it, since almost every component had to be upgraded to achieve the customer’s goals. Driven Audio installed a Pioneer AVIC-5100NEX in-dash navigation system, which meant that the client gained several upgrades right off the bat, starting with Apple CarPlay for wireless control over his iPhone for his music library, texting, phone book and Apple Maps control. HD radio is also a standard feature, as is Bluetooth for hands-free use and music streaming. We integrate the factory steering wheel-mounted audio controls with the Pioneer unit, and he gained a USB port for charging or for an iPod, iPhone or thumb drive. We used a color-matched installation kit to give the new navigation system a factory-installed look.
JL Audio Amplifier Powers Complete System
The music now travels downstream to a JL Audio HD900/5 amplifier. This is an extremely compact amplifier that has a sound quality that belies its compact chassis. It puts out over 900 watts of clean power, so achieving concert-level volume will never be a concern for the client. We installed the amplifier under the front driver’s seat, so there was zero loss of interior space. To give the client full control over his subwoofer, a remote bass knob was integrated into one of the black switch plates in the console. This gives him the ability to add in just the right amount of bass, as well as compensate for audio sources that might be lacking in the low end.
JL Audio Stealthbox For Maximum Bass And Very Little Loss Of Space
Whenever we do a sound quality upgrade, we want to make sure the bass in the vehicle will be great. In this instance, we went back to JL Audio and installed one of their Stealthboxes behind the rear seat. It houses a 13TW5-D2 woofer and is in a fiberglass enclosure that is custom-designed for this vehicle. The fit and finish are incredible.
New Speakers And Proper Door Treatments Bring The Tundra Audio Upgrade To Life
When it came time for speakers, we installed a high-quality set of component ones in the front factory locations, and a set of coaxial speakers in the rear doors. We treated the front doors with our sound-damping materials to eliminate any rattling or buzzing that might occur from the new, better-performing speakers.
Great Sound + Great Features = Another Satisfied Client
When the client came to pick up his vehicle, he was thrilled with the final product. He loved the fit and finish of the installation, but the sound quality made all the difference to him. And, of course, he loved the iPhone integration.
